Finally, a word of caution about per diem. On the surface it looks like a good deal as your net pay check is larger. You need to do the math and figure out how much it's actually saving you in State, Federal, and FICA taxes. If what you're saving on State and Federal taxes is less than the 'administrative fee', you should dump per diem as you're actually netting less. The largest difference tends to be FICA, while will end up decreasing your Social Security payouts in retirement. Rough math is per diem will cut your Social Security by about $600 a month. The difference in FICA needs to be put into a retirement account IN ADDITION TO what you'd normally save. You're also going to run into trouble getting a mortgage while on per diem because it looks like you're making 75% of what you are. You'll need manual under writting, which isn't that big of a deal but it's an extra step you'll need to be aware of.
