Why pay extra take truck to a shop and have inj. tested if it needs inj. shop must adj. valves after they replace inj,
JerryD13 Thanks this. -
if it is inj it would throw a code d13 always does mechanical or electical might need an adj or even maybe something is screwed up with spacers on exhaust side.

My D13 had a cam go down in it due to soot build up on the roller in the rocker box. Motor ran fine, still got 7 mpg+, just had a tapping sound like a lifter tick on a small block. Ran it for several months, then it went in for an overhead, found a badly worn lobe galled and had to get a new cam. It never threw a code either. If you catch it early, you can save yourself a bigger headache. Another one of our motors had to redo injectors, rocker box, and a few other things to the tune of $10 grand, it was .025 lash due to the wear on the other motor.
Best bet, run the overhead, it might be the cam under warranty. It's somewhat common in these motors. -
I found same wearing , but @1.4 mil. miles ; i replaced cam , but was not causing any problems or noise at this wearing stage; it's a D13 problem, some faulty design cam balancing , not from egr deposit .

1.4 million is good Johnny41. Mine went down at 350k, other trucks in our fleet were in the 500k range. They only service the emission systems in our trucks as issues arise besides the filter cleaning every 250k. Extended oil changes, extended fuel filter changes and low emission tuning, idling the motor too much in some cases all seem to increase the soot build up in our trucks.
Oldironfan, KB3MMX and JerryD13 Thank this. -
extended oil changes have a lot to do with when a cam goes also high idle time they should think about cleaning the filter based on engine hours and not milage
Oldironfan, KB3MMX and JerryD13 Thank this. -
Turned out the CAM was indeed bad --> took off head and CAM was visibly
UNEVEN - Volvo Dealer wants 8-10K to replace - going to do with outside tech
CAM alone is 2k.
Cheers -
Soot buildup with 15-40 causes the oil too go potentially way out of spec for viscosity. How many guys are running 15-40 ...still... With modern motors.... Lots unfortunately.
Cam lobes need oil flow.. lots of FLOW to keep surfaces cool .... The higher Vis oils Resist flow by nature.
The factory fill is 10-30 and with soot loading it's not gonna exceed much over the weight of new 15-40. It'll still flow very well into your service interval.
Getting oil FLOW to moving parts is far more important than looking for the thickest viscosity...... This is a hard mentality to break.
This is why everything is going lighter 10-30 , 5-30 and even looking at 20wt oils.... And synthetic oils that resist degradation FAR better than dino oils of the past. There are many benefits to the engine and also fuel economy gains.
If you run 15-40 in a D13 you will benefit to replace it with a 10-30 semi syn or 5-30 synthetic ... Especially if you have a DPF ..... Learn how ZDDP affects DPF ASH loading compared to Boron/moly based oils...
The oil has much more to do with DPF life... Ash buildup... than the soot from diesel combustion.shogun Thanks this.
