From what I've read, it appears that engines can be reprogrammed to various HP/torque ratings.
If one were in the market for a used truck, would a used truck set at the lowest HP/torque mean that the engine has been "under powered" and a better alternative than the same engine at full HP/torque?

Generally speaking, company trucks are castrated because many drivers would destroy the truck if given 500-600 ponies to play with.
alds, little cat 500, flood and 3 others Thank this. -
Mine was a fleet truck for 500k at a 425/1500. They day I bought it I had it turned up to 500/1750. Cost me a grand at the Volvo dealer. I know that my fleet truck was an OTR truck hauling the same stuff I am, up to 80k dry van. So, the truck was certainly driven harder because it had less power.
Make sense?Brettj3876 and JPS1 Thank this. -
Sometimes they also detune them in order to save fuel and/or parts....i've even seen different tunes for when on cruise control verses not...
Personally i dont think it matters if its detuned or not but what i would be more concerned about is if it was over tuned [ie: motor sticker rated for 450/1500 and is hopped up to 600/2000 when the max OEM spec available for that motor variant was 500/1800]alds Thanks this.
