This is not common for the Matthew CO. We try hard to stay within the 300 - 400 mile ( pee circle ). lol
But I myself WILL take the load if the load has a decent rate & Fsc.

Seriously though, I think that is a bad idea. If the drivers are working off of a percentage, and the rate pays good enough to cover the deadhead, they really don't have much to complain about that I can see.
If you are going to pick up loads and bring them back, seems like that will be increasing the mileage of the load unnecessarily (unless they happen to be comeing back through the area in route to their destination anyway)
My guys are all older 56(RETIRED) and 60(Friend of the family).
What I ment was, I can bring the loads to the yard and drop the trailers so that the guys dont have to DH anywhere. Just come back to the yard for a ready to roll trailer.??
That would eliminate the guys dead heading anywhere either than returning home. But most of the time they get a back haul and deliver that too, the same day!
Maybe if I help them out this way it would cover the LOSS in DH miles? Plus, if able to deliver the local backhaul and deliver the other load to? Wow, thats alot of work though dont you think?

But.......(that magical 3 letter word!!) you're an Leased operator...... well then it gets a little different, at best, to say.
#1 Do you choose your own loads? if so, who pays you? (do you have to wait for broker or does your " company" pay you?
#2 If you choose your loads, and the broker pays you, whats your point?
#3 If you are leased on to company, still, whats your point... Move on. get your Authority. Deal with some of the headaches. Deal with customers directly (i.e. shippers). and wait for 30 to 60 days for payment, and steer clear of a holes who want 120 days net!!!! (paveco)
If you cant waut for payment deal with the factoring companies. ( whats factoring?, if you gotta ask.....)
Dude, basically, you done the right thing, that load was /is crap.. regardless of back haul.
get it good going out , preferably as if no back haul exist, but reasonable i.e. pay for operating costs, then when you accept back haul, make sure its still within reason of time + costs.

Look I agree with a lot of these posts on this issue..... But a few I do not.
My company consist of myself and 3 other O/O. We all share the benefits and downsides of this business.(i.e. they share in the operating side as well, dot compliance, bookkeeping, maintenance, the whole d@#$ 9 Yards!!)
I take 8 % from gross. Unless I am helping them get a truck. We run for a select group of shippers.
We run and average of 98000 per year per truck.
With and average gross revenue of 175,989.00 per truck. (4 trucks!)
I started with my own Authority 12 years ago, and it wasn't running garbage freight.
I have had the same O/O ( basically partners as they also get 5% of net profits) for the past 10 1/2 years.
Did I do this by running cheap freight? NO
do WE continue to do this by running cheap freight? NO
We do this by performing the very basics for customers. get at a time it needs to be got.
deliver it when it needs to be delivered.
And everything else will be work itself out.
This is where the big boys are screwing up!!!!
Got 1000 trucks, 250 trucks in area. 3/4 of those are out of hours for day / week/ whatever!
Ohhh! and by the way. I know this will tie into another post, between myself and my other 3 partners, only 1 speeding ticket in 10 years.....That goes to show, if you "Know when to hold'em, and know when to fold'em!!! "
To all prospecting O/O's , You can do it. Just use your head! and fill a niche. It's out there.
And leave all that useless freight to big 3 or 4 or 5, they can handle it...after all they created it.
