hello everyone, as the title says im in the market for a new truck and have my eyes on two of them. I currently own a 2007 freightliner coronado with a 14l series 60 egr 13 speed and 3.55 rears. So far this truck does well on flats but terrible on hills. It being a egr engine im avg 5 mpg. So the two trucks i have in mind are

    2004 freightliner coronado with cat 6nz c15 550 and 3.42 rears with a 13 speed transmission and 22lp

2006 freightliner coronado with cat c15 550 with 3.91 rears with 18 speed and 22lr

Im mostly pulling 48 ft flatbed loads 80k gross from houston to the north east or to west coast where the steepest grade is about 8%. Crusing speed in my current truck is about 70mph. Which of the two would be better for my needs? Thanks in advance

Both of the truck's you mentioned are egr. 391 will pull better but the cat will work at low rpm 70 is the reason for some of the low mpg

The cat with 3.91s is going to be a fuel sucking pig at 70 I'm pretty sure.

So simple to just remove the egr. Everyone does it and engines a nice trouble free high mileage motor. That’s crazy to just sell the whole truck for something as simple as a egr delete

That's your problem right there. Sucks real money out of your pocket...

Dial it down a notch (63mph?) and the numbers will shoot right up.

I'm at 7.5-8mpg with up/down PA/NY mountains with cruise pegged at 63mph AAAAANNNNDDD.... I never hit 80K Lbs gross

Definitely the 04, those 3.90 rear ends on the 06 are going to have that cat screaming at 70 MPH. That is a 60 mph truck if you want any kind of mileage out of it. The 18 speed makes no difference in top end speed.

How do i know for sure about them not having an egr valve because in the pictures it doesnt seem like it? Ill be keeping the 07 so one truck with egr would be enough.

The 04 must be a glider. Cat 6nz is pre emission pre egr. 03-04 cat switched 2 c15 Acert with garbage twin turbo and egr. As far as I always thought unless I’m misinformed about 6nz but that’s the serial number you look for when buying a c15
