The crack could have been there for years,
Weld it, grind it flat, and weld a plate over it.

Studebaker Hawk and Crusader66 Thank this.

"Carl DeFebo (PA Turnpike rep.) said he did not know when the bridge was inspected last. Inspections are performed every two years."

So,,, it WASN'T in the last 24 months?

"The bridge, which spans more than 6,500 feet from abutment to abutment, opened in 1956 after two years of construction."

So if it takes more than 24 months to fix, maybe we should just blow it up and start all over again?

"The bridge will be a vital roadway to a distribution center being built by Amazon.com in Burlington County."

OOOPS!!! I hope Burlington county hasn't spent that tax revenue yet. Amazon might rethink that location now.

Latest info indicates it will be closed for a minimum of 2 weeks while they "stabilize" it (keep it from falling into the drink), then they will take even more time to come up with a plan for repair, then start repairs.

Apparently the Tappan Zee Bridge is the same age, they knew it was in bad shape and put things in motion to replace it, which is in progress right now. ( Have you seen the huge cranes they are using up there?)
I guess the PA TPK folks( since the crack is on their side of the bridge they are responsible to repair) are grossly incompetent. That was a crack before it was a clean break...
