Jet fuel prices have exploded since late February 2026, forcing nearly every major US airline into crisis mode. Analysts estimate the industry will swallow about $25 billion in unexpected fuel costs this year.
But Delta Air Lines is turning the chaos into an advantage. The carrier expects a $300 million benefit from its own oil refinery in Q2 2026, according to earnings guidance filed with the SEC on April 8. Delta remains the only major airline in the world that owns a refinery.
Back in April 2012, Delta bought the Trainer Refinery in Pennsylvania from Phillips 66 for $150 million through its subsidiary Monroe Energy. The deal was mocked instantly. Critics argued airlines should fly aircraft — not operate massive industrial fuel facilities.
For years, the refinery delivered mixed results. Some quarters it made money, other quarters it lost money. It wasn’t a game changer.
Then the market shifted.
When oil and jet fuel prices surged in early 2026, refining margins skyrocketed. Airlines without refining capacity were forced to pay those inflated margins to suppliers. Delta, however, was paying much of that margin to itself. Trainer processes around 185,000 barrels of crude per day and supplies roughly 40 to 50 percent of Delta’s domestic fuel demand.
“The refinery is expected to provide a $300 million benefit to the June quarter at current prices,” Delta CFO Dan Janki said in the April 8 earnings release. CEO Ed Bastian added that Delta expects to lead the industry with $1 billion in profit for the June quarter.
Fourteen years after being ridiculed for buying a refinery, Delta’s gamble is now being viewed as one of the smartest strategic moves in airline history.

A corporation that actually thinks about something other than next week's numbers? Surely a sign of the apocalypse.

The older I get the less I laugh at other people’s ideas. I’ve seen enough wild ideas that ended up working, and had enough of my “good” ideas fail. It doesn’t pay to be overly confident that you have all the right answers.

At the time it was thought of being ridiculous but what people and spectators failed to realize was that Delta was “future proofing” itself-something the airline has been known to do for DECADES. By having their own refinery it reduces the costs (and risks) of fuel hedging and it can also offset the expenses of maintaining the refinery by selling fuel to other airlines,if need be,as well as supplying its own fuel needs for its fleet!
Quite ingenious!
Look at current fuel prices right now..
