Only chance may be working the dock or another non driving position, then transitioning into a driving position when available. Most places will hire from within first.

If I were you, since you apparently currently live in Wisconsin, I would move instead to Superior as it is still in Wisconsin but still right where you want to be. Also, I would seriously consider Halvor lines which I believe is based in Superior. Best wishes in whatever and wherever you end up!

The area north of Duluth could be a tight market for jobs but that doesn’t mean you can’t get hired
I live just north of the Grand Portage border,,prices dropping on properties in Northern Wilds magazine?:D
    Good luck!

Why do you not want otr right out of the gate? Personal reasons? I may have misinterpreted your post, but if you're saying you don't want OTR because you think it's worse than local for a rookie, let me assure that the opposite is true. OTR is going down the interstate for 10 hours a day and backing maybe once a day. Local is going to have much more surface streets and city driving with more stops.

I could probably help you out a little here as this is where I live. If you're thinking of living near the BWCA Im assuming you want to live near Ely, Mn? If so, look at Superior fuel, Edward’s oil, G-men waste service, and scan Indeed for logging jobs. Superior fuel and Edward’s you can live anywhere in Northern MN from Duluth to Ely. G-men is based out of Ely, but hire across the entire Iron Range. If you want OTR, Halvor would be good, but you would probably have to park your truck in Virginia, Mn to go home. A number of people from Ely/Babbitt area work at Northshore Mine, but I don’t know if they are hiring off the street at this time.

That's exactly where we plan to move. Our realtor turned me onto the idea of possibly driving for an oil or LP company up there. Thanks for the prospects.

I guess I don't feel like it's "worse". I love driving extreme distances but I suppose I get the impression that some major OTR carriers are not all that accommodating to new drivers and the difficulties they may have while on their own for whatever reason. And home time is really important to me. I'd like to know a bit about the whole business before making a commitment like OTR seems to be.

That's fair. The hometime in particular for OTR is probably going to be less than you would really like. 1 day off per every 7 out is a common arrangement. Some with that structure will let you bank your days off and take as many as you like consecutively, others have stricter limits of only a couple days. Others just have a rotating number of weeks out followed by a couple days at home. Unless you get on a regional or dedicated fleet, you're probably looking at a couple days off per month most OTR jobs.
