I'm looking ONLY for someone that may have converted their trucking tractor and now has it titled as an RV but ONLY from Wisconsin.
There are some threads on here but all sorts of random things and with each state literally being different or difficult I was wondering if anyone within/from Wisconsin has ever tried to do this.
I'm trying to retitle and re-register my Tractor to an RV so it can be driven to shows or collector events. Right now much of the info I get from either OOIDA or the WiDOT changes based on whomever I talk with. I cant get any straight answers on how to actually own and operate a truck but strictly for personal use only. No hauling or anything.
So it was suggested I explore changing the VIN from a TRUCK to an RV and then avoid 99% of any of the BS on the road and no need for HOS issues either.
If so, I would like to hear what you needed to do and the process.
Thanks,
Hanadarko

I have no info specific to WI but I will suggest reaching out to the American Truck Historical Society. Instead of going the RV route they may have info for you on collector plates and companies that offer insurance for limited mileage collector vehicles.

Ah yeah. Ignore my post for about 17 more years. LolBean Jr., Feedman, Albertaflatbed and 1 other person Thank this.

talking to a supervisor at your local DMV would be the place to start. State laws are undoubtedly going to vary on this, from "absolutely not" to "sure fine" to "you can if certain documented modifications are made to the vehicle." You might also do some poking around in the RVing forums. It's not unheard of for hardcore RV'ers pulling large 5er's to convert Volvos and other heavy duty truck tractors into personal use tow vehicles. people who's been down this path already might be able to advise a little better. I bet searching YouTube for vids and mining the comment section for tidbits would shed some light also.
gentleroger and 1999 C12 Thank this. -
I wanted to do that with my '85 , 359 daycab. I was going to mount a small tin can camper on the 5th wheel, but decided I spent enough time in those things. A Wis. "collector" plate has a 500lb. weight restriction, 30(?) years old and seasonal operation only. I think, all that's required is to register the truck according to the weight, like a pickup, and "Not For Hire" and no DOT#, no CDL needed and I think you can thumb your nose at the scales,,,except maybe Nebraska. I'd contact Wis DOT, that should kill an afternoon,,,

I appreciate the thoughts and ideas guys.. I did have a collector plate on my 1999 KW W9 and used a weight of 20k max. It was a once time fee of like $300 I think. That worked out but I sold that truck..
Here is what I have found via Facebook but I dont know how up to date it is. Its from a guy (I have no idea how to contact):
Google is great SOMETIMES - so I am hoping someone on here did this or knows someone that did.
I will be calling the VRU Monday..

Seems like you simply fill out a MV1 application and submit the application with your old title.
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/formdocs/mv1.pdf
Scroll down the application and see where you can check boxes for either RV or motor home.
If you do it as a motor home it requires specific modifications like a toilet and. You’ll also probably need an inspection and vin check by the DMV before you get the new title.
Once the title is done you can simply register it as an RV.
Everything starts with getting a new title. Don’t confuse the dmv people.. simply tell them you want to make a title change.Bean Jr., Hanadarko, Long FLD and 1 other person Thank this. -
I'm not sure it's just as easy as submitting the MV1...
Cause the VIN will keep coming back as a TRUCK TRACTOR. So I think thats why it was stated to file 2 different MV forms and get an inspection to approve a VIN CHANGE maybe..
Thats how I read what little I have found so far. I'm 100% sure more than 1 person within WI has done this, even on a fairly new truck but so far haven't been able to find anyone despite Facebook and RV forums.
Thanks for the thought everyone, it's all good tips and advice. Naturally if I do this and am successful we will document this for the next guy in WI that wants to do this.. -
You’re overthinking it.
Your vin number will be changed.
Submit your mv1 and surrender your old title.. and pay the lady
