    Does the 2005 Detroit 60 Series 14ltr motor have an EGR valve?

    My truck can't get more then 5MPG everything else is within factory spec.

    Boy, that's not the best mileage at all. Especially for a Detroit. Sure everything is up to spec? Might want to run some Diesel-Kleen through there, sure wouldn't hurt.

    im having the same problem with the same motor. have 2 identical trucks, one is doing 5.6 the other 4.8. The one that is doing 4.8 is closed to 74 mph, took it to a local shop and had the ecm trip reset, now when it came back it showed that the egr was getting hot. Lets see what happens next

    2004 and 2005 Detroits have had problems with EGR valves. What are you pulling with it?

    We pull mostly reefer loads. Max weight 80,000Lbs.

    I should be getting at least 7mpg. The truck computer shows that it has been averaging 7mpg. If I can get 6mpg I would be jumping up and down for joy.

    I encountered this problem at my last employer with his truck. Whats your spec's on the truck?? Member medicineman has told me a couple solutions. You could try adding free flow mufflers by pittsburg power. When installed they should increase mpg by .5. They run about 160.00 each or cheaper. Also, try accelerating slower and keeping the rpm's at about 1400.

    The specs are.
    515 Hp 14ltr Detroit
    10Spd Trans
    3:50 gears
    22.5 low profile tires.
    Truck is governed @65mph. (Thank you Ontario government)
    65Mph = 1450rpm

    The EGR can cause it, and Detroit isn't alone with the problem. Does it stumble at times while accelerating and put out lots of smoke. 1 of the Western Stars I drove did that and got bad mileage, the other was a real horse and wasn't bad on fuel.

    It could be the wastegate on the turbo as well, but unless the computer throws codes to read, diagnosis is guesswork. If the check engine light is coming on after resetting all of the fault codes, that is a place to start looking.

    The EGR valve can be tested, First thing you test is the CAC. take it to a shop that knows their stuff, and get it checked, when was the last Valve set done? Air filters? If you have a infrared temp gauge do you have dragging brakes, Tire preasure? their is a long list of things that can cause excess fuel usage. Just a thought!
