I was thinking about this, and recently saw a thread mentioning it. If a company has it's own "company drivers" and contracts to O/O's then who gets the upper edge? It would seem to be company drivers.
So who should the O/O's drive for.
Sorry if the answer is obvious to some. I am new to this and trying to learn.

It depends on the situation, and what kind of trucking company you are contracting with, where I drive, their are several divisions. The owner ops with their own refrigerated trailers, get some of the best runs, the ones pulling our trailers get the leftovers, the owner ops doing live haul regularly get the same runs as the company drivers. There is the by-product division as well and many of those O/O get their one run a day or two or even three(with more than one driver), before any of us would get one. The veterans here at this Forum largely recommend joining OOIDA, and looking for recommendations before driving for someone or becoming affiliated with a company as an owner operator.

What you are saying can be true, owner ops at a former company didn't get any long hauls, and did more dead heads without a return load, the pay was good enough for most of them that they didn't care , and they didn't have to deal with the #2 dispatcher, the one most of them and us company drivers couldn't stand. You need to evaluate the profit potential at any company before and during any work for them. At another former company pulling Haz-Mat we figured the O/Os made about 10% less per year than the company drivers and they also didn't get to take the most profitable loads.

The company I am leased to has Company drivers, Lease Operators, as well as O/O's. Our Fleet Managers get paid according to our profitability. It would not be beneficial for them to give the better paying loads to Company drivers and make the Lease and O/O's suffer. Also, you have to take in to account that Lease or O/O's are not force dispatched and the Company drivers are. If we don't like what a load pays....or where it goes....we don't have to take it. And, just like this past week....I turned down a load that paid $1.24mi.....and 5 min later got a load that paid $1.48mi....AND more miles! Where as, Company drivers have to run what they are given. A lot of these guys think I'm crazy.....but, for me Prime is a good choice. You might want to check them out.....they just put in a yard in your neck of the woods....the drivers out of that area will mostly be regional....but the loads will most likely pay top dollar....considering the areas they will be running.

I drove my first two years at a company with a mix and there seemed to be some underhanded dealings amongst the planners and dispatchers. Was one group getting wildly rich while the other was living in the gutter? Not at all. There sure exists the possibility of a conflict of interest. When I bought a truck I went with a 100% owner/op company in order to avoid such conflicts. If I were to go back to copmany driving, I would only go with someone that's 100% company drivers. Not that I don't trust anyone. I just like to minimize the chances of things going wrong. Same idea behind not buying/leasing a truck through/with the help of your company. Just trying to keep it simple. There are enough head aches out here without inviting excess upon yourself.
