Do you actually go through your settlement line by line weekly?

Imagine running a business and not knowing where every penny is coming and going.. no wonder why this industry is so completely ####ed on all sides and its impossible to compete with cheap skates.

I do, settlements are calculated by humans, and humans make mistakes

Fair enough, and the answer is pretty clear. Nobody here is arguing you should not read it.

What I am still trying to pin down is the hit rate. For those of you who do read every line every week, how often does something actually turn up? Once a month, twice a year, almost never? And what was the biggest one you ever caught?

Star Rider, yours is the one that stuck with me. If the Chicago 1099 L/P settlements do not have lines at all, what do you even check against? Do you build your own record during the week, or is it take the number and move on?

I can tell you what I’m owed down to the penny way before the people that owe it cut a check. When I was leased on to my Dad he taught me to invoice every load just like it was for different brokers. Why wouldn’t everyone do that? The only one you can trust with your numbers is yourself nobody else has invested in your company quite like you have

That is the most complete system anyone here has described, invoicing every load yourself like each one was a different broker. Two things I am curious about. Roughly how much time does that bookkeeping take you in a normal week? And when your number and their settlement do not match, how often does that actually happen, and is getting it corrected usually quick or a fight?

I asked the owner of the company about it. All he did was start waving his arms and talking really fast in Serbian.
I did make out the word 'escrow'. Maybe when the escrow is paid up my settlement checks won't be in the negative anymore.

I know of a broker constantly shipping reefer freight from Carolinas to California for $5,000/load. The foreign drivers keep them loads covered he was bragging he made $25,000 one day his part.
