Hello everyone! I'm a 62 year-old man about to enter school and get my CDL. I've had some experience driving delivery trucks and fueling jets with a tanker. I'm super healthy and have no traffic violations or police record. I don't do drugs, drink, or smoke cigarettes. ( I guess I'm squeaky clean! )
I've always wanted to drive the big rigs and see the country. However, I'd like to see my wife and my 'furry child' some days, too !
My questions to you good people are:
1. Do you have any advice, comments, directions or whatever for a guy like me?
2. Can I realistically expect to be hired? (Please be honest and even brutal because I need to know about the real world of trucking as it is today without any sugar-coating !)
3. What is a good company to approach for a guy like me ?
Thanks in advance.
Do you have advice for an Elder newbie ?

You don't sound like you have the tennis balls on the walker, should be good at a number of places.
mje, Skydivedavec and quatto Thank this. -
62 isn't old in the trucking world. Check the webiste trans-system which offers tanker, flatbed, refrigerated. Each division will offer various hometime options. Ask if they recognize the school you plan to attend.

with an uplifting bubblel personality like yours,I think any company will give you a chance.62 is not old although I know ppl younger and they sound much older then they really are.So when u talk to a recruiter just have an uplifting voice and youll get a prehire.

I am 59 years old and about to get out of cdl school. I have a job waiting. Ya just gotta be healthy, the balls to do it and a clean record. Jobs are out there.
Tats Man, Skydivedavec, Chinatown and 2 others Thank this. -
1) Do dry vans, but more importantly stay away from flatbeds. Flatbeds are for the younger guys (unless you've been doing it all your life). Reefers are an option but dry vans are the more conservative choice.
2) You'll be hired in a second. Companies love older (and fit) employees. With age comes responsibility.
3) Follow Chinatown's advice for companies in your local.Skydivedavec, quatto and mje Thank this. -
