I run in California and we run over donner summit on 80 and highway 50 into South Lake Tahoe a lot. We have pretty strict chain laws In comparison to other states.
I have been told by some drivers that with the differential locked in the truck does not want to turn correctly while in the snow and I shouldn’t need to Lock it in when I’m fully chained up. 6-8 chains on a semi. Any advice or experience with driving in snow with chains?

Some trucks do not know how to run right or left. They might try it for you but you are going to be a little rough about the circle or understeer etc.

Interlock is there to keep it moving in conditions that will cause a normal drive pair to refuse traction. Just never use it on dry pavement, you will burn it up.

The truck wanting to go straight usually will happen going slow on the back roads in a tight turn and you have some throttle in it. If you let off the throttle they will unlock briefly/temprarily for the turn. It is a good idea to know about it and be expecting it.

I don't think you will see it happen going up Donner. Maybe if the 5th wheel was dry and sticky it would happen more often. Climbing Donner would be a good time to try it out and see what happens. Maybe give it some throttle when you go into a tighter turn to see how it handles.

The key is not engaging the inter lock over 55mph.

I wouldn't use them over 45-55, especially on ice. Suicide.

With the interaxle locked your diffs still allow wheel speed variances between the left and right. It will affect the steering but not nearly as much as locking in the axle locks.
