I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV......

I have this fault and I am not sure what it means, what causes it, or what could happen if it isn't dealt with or otherwise turns off....

Just don't want it to escalate into a road call issue.

My guess is the axle temperature sensor wiring is damaged. They hang out in the open. Not out of the realm of possibility that a rock hit the sensor or something like that.

Would it be obvious to the layperson in daylight to see?

Sometimes wiring damage is pretty obvious, other times not. Can't hurt to look at what wiring you can see as well as at the sensor. Sensors are usually threaded into the axle housing in the middle section, on the lower portion of the housing.

Mine has been like that since first trip through the snow. 50K later it is still like that front one works so I just ignore it. Wrench told me it is the sensor or a broken wire not a problem
