Does sending footage into DOT even matter anymore?

I think you've got it backwards. If it's a small outfit, I would send it straight to them. No doubt the company owner would like to know about this.

Personally, I wouldn't think DOT would do anything about it.

 

I'm not 100% sure what they CAN do.

I've had a dashcam in my personal vehicle since 2014. Not long after, someone almost hit me cutting me off, flying through traffic. The cam was a good quality HD one so you could easily see the license plate. I called the local police and while on lunch break, brought it out to him on a flashdrive to watch on his laptop in his cruiser. He said he would contact the vehicle owner but since you couldn't see who was driving, he couldn't do anything about it.

 

Noy really, you can send in the footage but because of the whole redlight cam fiasco a lot of states have laws that tie the polices hands save in very specific conditions. And thats if you have one where they even care.

 

You could post the name of the company here and well ya know, let things take their natural course.

Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. If I sent in everything along those lines to DOT that I see everyday, I probably would never deliver on time. Just yesterday in Texas, I probably could have rotated 10 instances of retarded driving. You have no way of knowing if any discipline was taken out on that driver. The best thing any of us can do at this point is drive defensively and anticipate stupidity. There's a 2 step equation there.

 

His safety department would keel haul him for aggressive driving.

Reading his post, my question was "why didn't you anticipate he would come over?". Did he come from an on ramp? Was it a normal lane of travel that turned into an exit lane? There were probably 3 or 4 clues that the dump truck was going to come over. Either way I'm going to adjust my speed so he either has a gap in front of me or he's well behind my drives. That way he can merge without me needing to take evasive action or will be clearly in the wrong.

 

Let's be honest, unless it is an accident and you are involved, nothing is going to happen.

It begs the question, which "DOT"? State or federal? The ones who need to see it, are the cops but then it will be unlikely that they will act on it.
