I got my Class A CDL two years ago at a driving school in austin,tx and havent drove since because I couldnt find anything local and due to the recession. The school I attented offers a free refresher but I think they shut down....IDK ......Two recruiters for swift told me that I wont need a refresher but I know im going to need one because I forgot about log books,Air Brake Check Test, and kinda got rusty with floating gears but still pretty good at it since i drove a mixer a while back with an 8 speed.By the way Im no stranger to 40ft Goosenecks so I wont have a problem with backing or driving around with a dry van etc...Will swift offer a refresher or when you get hired they will let you to take the 3 week training course before you go with your mentor for 6 weeks.....The truck driving school offers a refresher for free but if they shut down then i wont be able to get a refresher and it will have to be with swift....Im thinking that once you get hired with swift the training is free before the paid training kicks in after orientation....btw even though I already got m y class a cdl and wont have to go through dps for anything i guess I will start the three week training in San Antonio,TX and then orientation and paid training in lancaster,TX ....Id appreciate any info
Swift does not offer refresher courses that I know of. If you have not used your cdl A and it has been 2 years you will probably have to go their school. Don't worry about log books. Swift has a class on it during orientation. The 3 week school is not free initially. Payments will be deducted from your pay after you get on the road. Then after a certain period of time they actually add the payments back to your pay, so the school ends up being free after you have worked for them awhile. You won't get hired by Swift before or during school although more than likely you will be hired if you complete everything. No one is actually hired until the last day of orientation.
Cool thats all i needed to know.Thats great you dont have to pay nothing at first for the first 3 week training and its good that they just deduct it from your first few paychecks.I wasn't too sure about this because the school i went to got shut down I believe.Thank You very much for your time
Actually, Swift will give you a road test, then determine how long you would need to go out with a trainer...but since you haven't used your CDL yet (long haul) you will probably be with a trainer the full six weeks. Like RD said, you will get a log class in orientation, and your Mentor (hopefully) will be able to explain, in detail, what you don't understand or are confused with. The school (no refresher) is for those who don't have a CDL in their pocket yet, not for those that do!
Otherhalf.....so basically i wont need to go to the classes with swift where you get your cdl instead I go to orientation and take a road test so the trainer can see what i can do and go from there? That sounds good to me then. Thanks
Can anybody help me on what too expect from swift when i leave too go too there school in columbus ohio, june 22 is my report day,any advice would be great, thank you.
If you have been out of school for over a year and not used your cdl they require you to go through school again. I know, LOL. I had to even though I had a cdl A
I consider it a refresher because i already have my cdl....I guess nobody here knows whats going on....I guess I will have to find out myself......Cherrio....Cherrio lol
Hey, Landstar.. I can only tell you my own experience. I recently moved from Knight to Swift. Because I had been working OTR within the immediate six months prior, no refresher was required. As I understand, if I had lacked experience within the most recent six months I would have been required to go out with a trainer for a while before getting my own truck. Incidentally, I'm pretty pleased with Swift so far. Hope that helps.
Hello Konchok How was knight? I was always told that they were a good company to work for.My cousin been driving for 26 years going through company after company...I still dont know why hes going from job to job...I dont know whats his problem....He said swift for him was a very good company to work for...He got a brand new truck still with the plastic on the seats and paper on the floor...this was 3 years ago tho....What he liked about it was they guaranteed miles and always had a load....he was getting like 41 cents.....I dont know why he would quit that.He said he loves running teams though cause he says you make more money.....I wouldnt know cause the only experience I have is 3 weeks of driving at a driving school which i was good at and got my class a cdl....I couldnt find a driving job that was local because they wanted atleast a year or two of otr experience thats verifiable.I havent had any job for the last three years...I just pulled a 40 ft gooseneck around working for my dad for cash...Thats the only cmv experience i have....
