I only haul dry birds. I meant the outside of the trailer. Mine are the old fashioned ones that turn gray over time. Unless I'm careful only to take lanes where good weather is always happening.

    No disrespect intended here..
    But..
Imagine if you had to make Truck/Trailer & Mortgage Payments, plus support a Wife & Kid/s out of that $53,600..
It really is a Single Mans game, for the first few years starting out until you get established build some business momentum.
I went through all this over a 1/4 of a Century ago..

It has been (repeatedly) suggested that I would not have had nearly as many "random" inspections if I washed my truck a bit more frequently -- something I intend to do myself once I buy some truck-friendly property. Until then, I hate paying $80 to watch a stoner rub gritty bristles and blast reclaimed water onto my already faded 15 year-old paint...

None taken. I'm not surprised, but I am a little disappointed in my results. But I hope it helps the next guy know what to expect, avoid some of my mistakes, or even decide not to jump ship from a good company in the first place.

My maintenance cost is extreme though, so I would hope that someone making a truck payment isn't getting an inframe their first year. And a lot of those expenses were elective and/or might have been reduced if I'd grown a pair in dealing with incompetent shops rather than write them off and move on to the next guy:

~$8000 in failed APU repairs & eventual apu replacement
~$5,000 in A/C repairs & hotel bills from when AC was not working
    ~$3000 wide single conversion

And those are just the bigger ticket items... I am not kidding when I say that every third repair or so had to be done all over again because the first shop didn't do the job properly. Again, something truck-friendly property should help (so I can do most of the work myself, unrushed).

On the other hand, it is important to note that when I made ~$55k as a company driver, the company was paying another $15-20k in taxes & benefits so you really should be seeing $70k+ as an owner op just to equal that same earning power...

Then again, as a company driver I was away from home ~330 days/year. As an o/o I didn't work most of January, all of February, most of March, most of June (inframe), and half of August. So there are some non-monetary considerations as well...

I am sure clean new trucks dont get inspected as often
we are borderline intervention status all the time
and in 22 months i been here just one level one and one level 3
I keep telling the owner I want a new black trailer with alum wheels
He said my wife told him not to get it she couldn't afford the polish bills or all the lights I would add
    shhhhhhhhhhh just our lil secret

Just to add one thing I learned when telling people about my time off is that most of its forced. One week the truck was in the shop then another week it's in the shop again and then the worse if it all is getting a half decent load from where we live. I think the best thing to do is reduce cost wherevera possible

I disagree. if anything, adding kids to the mix made me a lot more responsible with my money. The vast majority of people don't have an income problem, they have a spending problem. dy would have done just fine with a truck payment and family bills. Obviously not as good, but he would of survived.
