Need help! I am in the hiring process but I don't know a bunch of OGs to give me the lowdown. Experienced information and advice will be greatly appreciated.

As an example, I thought I had a tow vehicle. It's an automatic. Won't work. Now I'm looking at Uber, hotels, buses, fast food, airfare, waiting around... Honestly, it sounds miserable without a tow vehicle.

Can you talk me off the ledge? Is there a reasonable way to make this work?

    TIA

Go buy a cheap ford ranger, get a pushrod 4.0 or a 3.0 and have it checked out by a good mechanic. Get one with a 4 or 5 speed, and not a flex fuel version. That's all you need.

Thank you, Ridgeline. If you'll stick around I've got more questions.

    1) How miserable is it without a tow vehicle- Uber and airlines, motels and fast food...?

    2) The guy at Dan's said tow vehicles pulled by class 8 trucks get beat up. He didn't think using a dolly with an automatic was much of an option, either.

    3) I thought if I'm towing a car, I can take out the passenger's seat and make a pretty nice bed over there. I don't need to be hanging out in a motel when I have someplace to go. Pull over, get a shower. Get sleep. Get food. Go.

Any thoughts on these items, Ridgeline?

Don't know, I hated to be without a vehicle when I traveled. Others may step in and answer that.
You want a manual 2 wheel drive to flat tow. Using a dolly seems to add to the complexity.

I have trucks that are towed, Dodge 2500s, they do take a lot of stones and debris, and replaced a few windshields.
You will want a motel room, you can't live like an animal for long.

I really appreciate the info, Ridgeline.

Well, I just got a job offer today, something I applied for weeks ago. I was really looking forward to setting my own hours again. Vacation time any time I can afford it. Even choosing amongst destinations.

The choice is, buy a truck for a job I'm not sure I'm going like or, just get a paycheck. It's not OTR. Probably take the paycheck.

Even so, still like to hear all I can about drive away.

Take the paycheck until you know if you like it, then buy a truck if you do?

The problem with that, I won't like doing it without a tow vehicle.

Get there, now what? Waiting on Uber. Waiting on a bus or plane. Another Uber to get back to my car. That's got to suck, and little pay.

That tow vehicle is everything. Drop the truck, hop in my tow vehicle and head straight to my next job, no messing around.

Looks like delivery for Ryder instead.
