I am a freight broker and I have seen lately a lot of scams. I would post a load then a carrier would book my load and ask for quick pay. Then the carrier would pass it on to a broker company where they would list the load for above average pay on the load boards.
Please be aware of broker companies that are less then one year old in business and a too good to be true pay rate!! Business is slow out there and all the rates are low because shipping companies are pushing down on us low rates!!

I personally don't do business with companies that haven't been in business for years. Do you mean quick pay or an advance on the load. Because you don't get quick pay until the load is delivered.

I call BS. Rates are low because brokers still want to line their pockets with the bulk of the shippers payment. TQL is one of the worst, if not THE worst. Recently ran a load they were offering $2,100 on, told them no, I want $3,100. They said okay like it was nothing and seemed happy about it. Same issue with my uncle. They wanted him to make a run for $3,000, he told them no, I want $4500, five minutes later they gave him the okay and sent him the rate con.

Why not go get direct customers and cut brokers out entirely?

Any advice on a single O/O with one truck getting direct customers?
Enough to keep the truck rolling f/t ?

Because the direct shippers know what's up and are pushing the cheap freight too now.
Look at news of carriers going out of business, many stories them losing their direct shippers because they found others for cheaper.

Too many out here happy to run fuel money.
It's all mostly the drivers fault, more so than shippers or brokers.

Maybe they think if they keep busy with the cheap loads the repo man can't find them

The brokers can offer a customer access to thousands of various trucks that cover the entire country.
A single O/O with his single truck can’t compete with that.
Unfortunately this is why brokers exist and are a necessary evil in the logistics industry.
An O/O could pickup a few direct customers but they most likely couldn’t provide enough work to keep them busy. So then they are left with filling their schedule with broker work.

    You're not wrong at all.

I'm not a broker these days, just an operations manager at a brokerage. Main issue is carrier communication. If carriers communicated to our customers the way they do to us, they'd lose that customer in an instant.

You need a middleman that speaks Corporate and Trucker.
