Was just wondering if anyone's ever come across or heard of this crazy of a fine. I was driving through a industrial park in PA in a tri-axle where I passed the entrance I needed to go into, I went past it about 1/4 mile to where it turned into a 10 ton weight limited road and turned around, as a turned around a city stopped me, cop weight me 16000 over the weight limit and fined me 4800. Is that a bit excessive?

hate to say it, but it sounds like pa robbery to me. very corrupt system there. a friend of min e got pulled over for being on a road restricted to 53 foot trailers. missed his turn by 500 feet. cost him $950

I got a a big one in Chicago years ago. Following the customers pre-recorded directions. It was a window manufacturer that had a plant, showroom and warehouse, and I was hauling the pvc powder to the plant, which is a different location. The directions were for customers to pick up, not trucks to deliver. Turned down a poorly marked 5 ton road grossing close to 80k. The city DOT stopped me before I could find a turn around spot...it was going to be over $17,000. When I told him to give me a second to gather my belongings and call a cab, because they'll never pay that much, the city will own a truck, trailer and load of pvc powder, he decided to bargain with me. He ended up dropping the weights down to below what I was empty... but the fine was $3086. While writing me up, a Werner rolled past, and he was on the radio to his supervisor at the other end of the street. Said that was the 6th Werner this week, he gave the 1st truck a break, the rest paid full fine amounts, and it was rail freight, so 5 of the 6 had 5 digit fines. Then a double length bendi-bus went by, but it was owned by the city, so they were allowed. Which proves it's nothing but a money-grub because there were way more busses on that road than trucks, and you know darn well a double length city bus weighs more than 10,000 lbs.

When I asked what the proper truck route I should have followed was, he would start to tell me, but then stop, because it was either a low bridge or another weight restricted road...he finally said, honestly, I have no idea...then handed me my ticket and receipt for payment which had to be paid on the spot via comcheck because of it's large amount.

We have a road that is posted at 13 tons. Unfortunately I dont feel it is marked well enough. So while I will use it to stop a vehicle I wont cite someone unless I can prove the driver is local and knew better. I see no point in committing highway robbery.

I never had any problem on light roads. Generally. If there IS going to be a problem it's a bridge. There is a bridge of stone that was replaced not far from Manassas with my name on it on US 15. I did not drop it. But I got yelled at. And how.

If you were following formal directions and got fined like that.. then take it to court. Involve the facility you were heading to or better yet suponea the person who gave you those directions. And haul him or her in there.

They will never sign a statement or show since that can put them on the the hook. Sounds like they probably know but don't care like most customers.

Well... I agree with you partway. I would think if a person refuses to show they would be treated as a hostile.

Anyway I just sprout what I think ought to happen anyhow. It's a mess.

I understand PA signed everything and everywhere 10 tons these days. In my time you literally ran wherever as long you don't roll it or slide off them small roads.

The best thing to do sometimes in a situation like that is just stop, 4-ways on and call them before you hit the restriction.

I came upon a 10 ton bridge (company directions on QC). I had my wife taking screen shots while the LEO rolled to where I was. He told me I was going over the bridge because he was not backing me up 1/2 mile. So over I went. I talked to him and he finally let me go with a verbal warning. I called our safety and passed his info. A driver the day before went over and got a nice $1000 fine.
