Good morning first off everyone. Today marks about maybe 2 weeks that my PTO switch in my cab has been acting up. I keep on testing my PTO switch when I am not loaded and it always works. Then once I am loaded and go to drop the load it either works or it doesn't. Now what do I usually do when it doesn't work?
I would turn off the truck, turn it back on and just keep playing with the switch over and over until it works eventually.
To be honest I sent my mechanic over there and he basically just said that he can't fix anything that is not broken when he finish troubleshooting.
The only think I brainstormed was my hydraulic lines are either clogged or not responding correctly sometimes to do the load. I believe underload PSI should reach 2k-3k. Can any driver confirm this? Today I am going to be checking my PSI when not loaded and when loaded to see the difference. I heard you can crank the gauge up just maybe 1/4 up at a time and see if it would turn on then. Any suggestion anyone what it could be? Can this be an underlying issue with the engine oil, turbo, electrical? I really just at this point am lost especially after the mechanic.
Thank you for suggestion.

Are you hearing the pto engage or not?
If it's not engaged and whining then it's the switch or something electrical. If it is. Then it's probably hydraulic.
Are you driving an automatic or stick? What kind of trailer. -
KENWORTH T880 TRIAXLE AUTOMATIC DUMP TRUCK (MX13 WITH ALLISON trans)
Just to clarify your stating IF IT IS whining when NOT ENGAGED do you mean before I even turn the switch on? That this means it would be something electrical?
Then your saying IF IS IS engaged you mean switched on and making noises then its most likely HYRDAULIC? -
Is this a factory PTO or is it an an up fitters install?
If it is factory, the PTO is controlled by the Body module if I remember right, it is programmed and could be a failure point. This means that a dealer is the only way to figure it out. -
Yes it is factory because we purchased that truck like that I believe heritage put the body on so they would understand it which why my next point of contact. Ok so your saying there is no way to diagonse this issue ? For example just 1 hour ago I dump my load no issues what so ever but now I am on the way to drop another load and who knows if it will work there no way to really know -

Usually ~1800 psi and a 27-31 gph pump are all you need for a dump, 25-3000 is more for a walking floor, don’t touch it if you don’t have a gauge
Start at the pto and work your way back up, is it getting air at the fitting? -
The pto whines when it's engaged.
Does nothing when it's off.
How are you turning the switch on? Maybe it's your technique.
For instance. Mine requires the break pedal but only kicks on in gear or switched to neutral.
If I'm in neutral already and brake is released. It won't go in when I press the brake again. It just sits there and grinds. I have to brake and put it in gear again then back to neutral.
In other words. There's a technique to activate pto. you can't just use neutral with brake pressed to flip switch and release brake to make it spin. It won't work.
