Eagle trucking out of tucson, AZ
HI TONHER, While in school last month, Kevin Colins from Eagle, he's the owner, came to our school to give a talk about his company. They do mostly stuff for Family Dollar, Office Depot, a few other outlets. Sounds like they are a pretty sound company. He is also the largest sub-contractor/owner-operator under Werner. All their hireing policies and benefit programs come under the Werner umbrella. It's good because they have all the bennies of QC, road passes, etc. The pay might be a tad better,depending on the area or region. I've already commited to Werner because I want the 48-Long hauls. I think you'll do good with Eagle if you can get in.....give it try. good luck,,,Rob

Anyone know if they have regional runs? What they pay the new folks?
What they pay during training? That sorts thing?
Eagle called me while I was still doing the "co-driver' training at Werner. The woman on the phone told me they haul Werner freight and would I be interested in dedicated? When I told her i wanted I-10 dedicated to be near sunshine, Mexico, and the Spanish language she was speechless. She assured me I would hear from them soon even though they could not accomodate my desires. They would not want me anyways since I am not desperate for miles and park the truck daily to do
no less than 3 hours of kung ## practice. My lead driver tells me they are owner operators trying to sell me a truck. I think it is owner operators leased to Werner looking for drivers?
I drove for Eagle for about 6 months (started with Werner 1st...drove for Werner proper for 1 year before going to Eagle). They will not try to sell you a truck...to the best of my knowledge they don't sell trucks, only run them with company drivers. They were good to me overall...I was happy overall. I left them because (since I live in Pennsylvania) they couldn't find me an account that got me home more than 3 days per month. I have since quit trucking entirely for the time being.
- excellent miles (I ran 48 states...if you go with a dedicated, it might be different, but I never heard a complaint from any other drivers)
- The dispatcher that Werner gives to most Eagle drivers is really nice and works hard to make sure you're home on time (this would probably only apply if you run 48 states...if you choose a dedicated you'll have that account's fleet manager instead of the one I had...also, this was a year and a half ago, so that guy might be gone).
- You are a name, not a number...the folks at the Tucson terminal are super-nice.
- Every time I stopped by the Tucson terminal they gave me a free Eagle t-shirt!
- No more having to go to Werner terminals to get work done! Huzzah!
- No expectations of running your truck unsafely...if you call in an equipment issue that could be unsafe or put you out of service, it WILL get fixed.
- When I was there, there was a young roadrunner that used to hang out outside the terminal...roadrunners are awesome!
- They aren't in during evenings or weekends...this can be quite the pain in the bum when Werner is trying to get repairs approved if you break down during evenings or weekends.
- They will not change out your truck until it has reached the number of miles that they get rid of all their trucks (I can't remember anymore what that mileage was)...even if the truck you're driving is a lemon that breaks down all the time.
- If something is broken that is not a safety or DOT issue, they may not be in a rush to get it fixed...I once drove across the desert, Phoenix to Las Vegas in the middle of August with no air conditioning...yes, they were aware that I had no air conditioning....shmeh.
- You are a name, not a number...this can be a bad thing when, on the rare occasion your fleet manager *does* piss you off, you send a less than kindly message to him over the Qualcomm...if this happens, you should expect an angry phone call from Kevin. However, as long as you restrict your angry words to yelling *at* the Qualcomm, and not sending them *over* the Qualcomm, you should be fine
I never met a truely discontented Eagle driver during my time on the road. As I said, overall, I was quite happy with them! The bad was never THAT bad and the good totally out weighed the bad. Of course, I never thought Werner was all that bad either, I only jumped ship because the dedicated account I was driving for decided they didn't want to pay for a dedicated fleet anymore and I didn't like my new dedicated. Eagle gave me way more miles. Hope this helps anyone considering Eagle!
Everything Kitten said is for the most part correct. They are leased to Werner and do not own all the trucks, some leased some owned by them. I drove for them and did 48 states for several months, usually had pretty good loads and kept moving. This was due to my fleet manager at Werner and had nothing to do with Eagle. I did Dollar General for a short time, mainly for the home time because 3 weeks out and 3 days home was hard on me and the family. As for repairs on the trucks, well I can tell you they are pinching pennies. I was given a truck with 700K on it without an APU. This truck had many problems, some of which I fixed myself. Dealing with maintenance can be a challenge as they usually have an attitude whenever you call and seem to be more focused on going home if you call near the end of the day. Depending on the truck (owned by Ealge or leased) you might have to deal with broken creature comfort and/or cosmetic items. I was told once "we only fix DOT reportable items".
I can tell you that not all the benefits are managed by Werner. Do your homework and ask questions before you decide who to go with. You will be surprised what you find out. Looking back I would have chose Werner due to better benefits and better/newer equipment.
