First I have zero experience with these heavy truck clutches. Need advice and to gain a little knowledge before dropping it somewhere for replacement.
A week ago it slipped once and thought it was a problem with maybe a solenoid tied to the selector. Next day couple times more, now it’s a constant problem loaded or empty climbing hills.
Doesn’t seem normal with 422k miles on it so I’m a little bummed about it. I pull a majority of my load at 80k lbs and run mountains a lot. Maybe this is the reason for early failure?
I also float gears so I’m not actually using the clutch all that much. Yah, couple years ago I heated it up pretty good backing into a tight place fully loaded..smelt it burning up..I’m far from perfect but hasn’t happened again.
Curious if it’s normal wear for what I do and wondering about how much I should prepare to pay. I understand it’s a big job but don’t want to get taken advantage of either.
Going to insist on an oem clutch but otherwise clueless. Is it necessary to have the flywheel resurfaced? Guess if I’m going to pay I don’t mind paying more for a job done right.
Just crawled under and removed the inspection plate. Other than probably needing to cut back on grease I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. Didn’t see a wear indicator either.
Pic is the tag on my Mexican Eaton gearbox fwiw.
2023 389 565hp Cummins, Eaton 18 and 3:55 axle ratio..422k miles all driven by me.
Eaton 18 speed clutch slips under torque.

Every time I have transmission removed. Any part that can be replaced, I have it replaced.
I don't want the expense of removing the transmission again, to replace $200 part couple months down the line, because I tried to "save" money on parts. I always have flywheel resurfaced. -
“Looks good “ lol.
I honestly don’t know. Other than the 1/2 inch gap being good I can’t complete the task by myself..watched a YouTube video on how to check, lol.
At a Love’s in Belen, NM right now. Will have their tech check the adjustment tomorrow morning..he’s not in today. Just went in there to see if they can tell me what the wrench symbol on my dashboard is saying. Comes and goes if I cycle the key..seems to idle funny when it’s lit up.
Always something!! -
Take a pic through the inspection plate looking up at the throw out bearing and fork. Any free play, or is it a hydraulic clutch?
-
Can have free play at the pedal but tight on the throwout bearing.

Mechanical clutch.
Not crawling under it again today. Hot as hell now and some Bozo decides to drain off a couple gallons of coolant while I’m under my truck…I’m downhill.Siinman, D.Tibbitt and Big Road Skateboard Thank this. -

If you do end up needing a clutch.. I don't know if you have a SOLO now(self adjusting) or manual adjusting but I would never put a solo back in a truck. My experience is limited but I've never seen a solo actually wear out.. something always breaks first..
