Its true! I took the last 14 months off after a voluntary quit. No unemployment and zero burden to taxpayers. Prior to my vacation I was corporate with the same company for 14years. Will my 14 month vacation cause any problems in the hiring process? I have plenty of people that can vouch for my whereabouts during this period.

I have had a gap in my employment, and simply explained that we lived on my wife's income only...and I stayed home to take care of the kids and a little remodeling of the house. Nowhere near 14 months...but who cares.
Most applications require you to explain any gaps---there are no "acceptable/unacceptable criteria" that I know of. -
Thx whitedog. Have dealt with several background checks over the years but thought I should ask about a gap in employment this large. On another note(hijacking my own thread) If any other newbs like me are reading...I can't stress enough how important is to be truthful and forthcoming on background checks, like whitedog said...not really a right or wrong. They want to know if they can trust you! Inadvertant mistakes do happen, be truthful and humble and it can go a long way.

Some will ask for letters as White Dog stated and others won't care. I had a three year gap that no one ever asked me to explain further than what I put on the application.

Also, any inaccurate information on your credit report needs to be corrected. This would be quite difficult to do out in the middle of nowhere and not being able to go home to correct any problems that could result from inaccurate or false information.

I have encountered one company that had a Company Policy of no more than 6 months total GIE in a 3 year period and I was excluded. Shame cause it is a good company. I also had to obtain a wage and earnings statement for 2010 from Social Security Dept with my current employer in addition to Third Party Notarized statements. I would suggest you go ahead and obtain the Social Security Documents. It can be done on site same day, but thru mail it can take 60 days+.

The economy has forced many people to be put out of work for extended periods of time through no fault of their own. The same also holds true for tragic family circumstances or situations, as helping to care for aging parents or grandparents, or someone who may have been in a serious accident.

Some companies want a notorized letter signed by family or neighbor or friend explaining your gap in employment. Not all companies want it, but some do.
