EPA proposes removal of Greenhouse Gas regulations for all commercial and passenger vehicles

Which would never have come to be if the federal government hadn't passed such onerous regulations. All of this could have been prevented if they had worked with OEMs to strike a reasonable balance between emissions reductions and reliability, cost, etc. - and done so on a reasonable timeline.

He satisfied demand in a market the feds created.

 

They KNEW what was coming for years and years, but chose to wait until they were under the gun to actually make it. Of course the rushed engineering of early emissions motors sucked ###. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Just the same with telling them they're on a timeline. If the timeline isn't there it would NEVER get done.

 

Source citation needed. As I recall, OEMs were complaining that the EPA's timeline didn't give them adequate tine to develop and prove the technologies in question. Granted, a huge part of the problem is that the EPA set the timeline based on factors other than the amount of time that would actually be necessary to get those technologies ready for market.

 

If the regulation is so onerus then the best option is to strictly comply and the disruption will cause a change in regulation. Pretending to comply hides the problem.

As for "working with OEMs" - regulators could have given OEMs double the time and OEMs would still have been racing to slap together something compliant.

You mean the one where they were fined less than $2,000 per vehicle sold with defeat devices? Where the CEO was allowed to keep more than $100 million in salary and bonuses?

Yeah because they couldn't meet emissions and had to cheat. Didn't Cummins get caught doing that too in the Ram pickups?

Just proof that the systems don't function right when the manufacturers have to cheat to meet the targets.

 

Please, enlighten me because I'm not aware of any time when strict compliance (outside of malicious compliance, maybe) ever caused a change in the offending laws/regulations.

Then they should have asked the OEMs how much time they would need in order to develop, prove, and bring to market sound technologies that would cause the desired emissions reductions, and then given them that amount of time.
