Experience with your LTL company

    Yea no matter where you go you will always start on the extra board for a while in LTL. IF you can deal with it then you will be ok. I cant stand it, but at least I pretty much work almost everyday, same start time Mon-Fri, just sux when I go in and am told no work and have to drive home... but if someone is late I get their time card and swap for mine and get their run and they have to go home

    There are hundreds if not thousands of union companies and the only one you can come up with is YRC?

    I believe that a union forum should be placed back on the regular forum for all to see. I disagree with the moderators. If unions are that good, and I think they are, then let them show the others just how good they are.

    I'm not a union driver but I believe I have benefited from them due to their existence just have others have stated. I make a good wage, paid by the hour with overtime after 8 hours and a good health and retirement plan.

    Disagree all you want, the Union forum is not coming back to the regular forum.
    Union talk in the political forum would work fine if people just tried, none of you have even bothered to try it.

    Doesn't that tell you something? I think Helen Keller could see that union companies have paved the the way to allow others to make a living wage.

    Man, would you let it go? You're tilting at windmills in here, and all you're doing is gumming up a good informational thread. This is honestly the first time I've been able to get some good technical info on the ltl side, and that's specifically because it's not a giant pro and anti battle royal.

    So to everybody else: how true is it that somebody has to die or that you have to know somebody on the inside to land work at one of the low turnover outfits? That's not a slam, btw, it's a genuine question.

    14 years with roadway. lost my senority in nashville when they merged with yellow. bumped into atlanta and working conditions went farther and farther down hill. gave it up and came back to tenn.
    brother n law had 17 years with consolidated when they shut down, got on at roadway and was layed off when yellow merged in
    my dad had 23 years with mclean and when they shut down he got on at yellow and retired with total 37 years with teamsters. hes the only one with a sucsess with retirement in the family
    with the way theve wacked retirement it just wasnt worth starting over with these companies everytime you think you got retirement in sight
    so i bought a truck and left the book of rules behind and much happier for it

    It just depends on where you're at. Chicago is a pretty big city so you should get some steady work. I'm in the Los Angeles area and stay kinda busy. I average about 550 take home a week claiming single 0 and after 401k. That's on the low end though. I work for Reddaway which belongs to YRC. I am also on the extra board which I hate. I've been there a little over 6 months. I do know when they will call which is a plus. I only work nights and love it that way. When I worked at Yellow years ago and I was on the extra board, they would call me in at any time of the day. I was a real slave to the phone then. Making 50k your first year is possible but not likely. When I was OTR, I would go to an R&L terminal in Chicago. They seemed busy year round. Don't know how they are to work for on line haul but their team drivers make a killing,

    Not true in my situation nor any of the others after me (upsf). Strong work history (no jumping around), references, neat,clean appearance, and ability to read,write and speak in correct sentences helps
    a lot.

    ARCH, If not mistaken, by your comments your in the Nanuet area? And you are correct in that we didnt renew lease with Estes and are re-opening our terminal there, as of this writing it looks as it will be strictly for local deliveries, no break bulk as of yet.

    I worked at Saia, Estes, R&L and YRC. Never had a problem getting on with any of them. I have just had a hard time staying on with them. I'm at YRC again and hoping I last through the winter. I didn't get on with ABF or ODFL at the time cause my driving record. Haven't tried either of them in years. Never tired FedEx Freight or Conway.

    I'm sure it helps to know someone who works at any company in getting hired. As far as someone having to die or retire, etc, that will depend on where you live and how big your terminal is. Now getting to the top of the board is several years if not decades in some places. Some guys refuse to quit, retire or die.
