The simplest way I can put it is the longer the shaft is underneath the load the more efficient the antenna will be.
A $26 oil filled antenna from Pilot truck stop with a homemade 4-foot shaft underneath it will outperform a $75 Wilson 5000 as it was manufactured.Last edited: Mar 18, 2016

Have you noticed any difference in the performance?

I never ran the antenna with the original shaft. Bought it years ago to put on my Prostar, but before I figured out the problem on that truck, so I couldn't get it (or any other antenna) to tune.

Note that I haven't added the extra 15" into the shaft yet. When I posted the original pics it was at 32" of shaft. I extended it to 40 a couple weeks ago, which you see in the pic above.

You can unscrew the original Shaft from the load and make a shaft out of one solid piece that screws right into the bottom of the load.

Yep. I was going to have a one piece 40 made up, but now I want to try 55 and see how it does... it'll probably be just over 7' overall after that's said and done. When I get it where I like it, I'll get a one piece made up.

Coils, inductors or loading coils (take your pick they are all the same) adjust the antenna to allow it to operate at that given frequency but they do not always mean that the maximum amount of radiation is transmitted.
One reason that some fiberglass antennas work well in some situations is because they are loaded (coils) spread out along the length of the fiberglass shaft, opposed to say a short (5 foot) top or mid loaded antenna where the loading coil actually can act like a trap (that's something that prevents the power for a given frequency from going beyond that point).Diesel Dave and rabbiporkchop Thank this.
