You realize that on 100 gallons that if you pay 20 cents less you are still only saving $20. Now factor in weight (800 pounds plus tank), and the expense of installing and purchasing and you will have to run a lot of miles to break even, much less save.

All one has to do is know the current tax in each state and deduct that amount to compare net price.

And how many miles you are gonna, or did run in that state. Example: Ohio diesel tax is .28 p/gal. Pa. next door is .7420 p/gal. Then you mpg figures in. Trucks are a cash cow. Some states even have a surtax added on. Indiana comes to mind. Have all the rates, but right now to lazy to dig it out of file cabinet.

Today's pre ifta fuel price. Trip from Baltimore to Portland, OR. 30 mile route variance.

    Somerset, PA 2.512 Sunoco
    Jessup, MD. 2.505 TA
    Morgantown, WV 2.822 Pilot J

This is a small sample of pre-IFTA fuel prices. With the ability to travel 1500-1800+ miles.
You could save a bit of money.
I always try to fuel at the lowest pre ifta price or put a few gallons in to get to my desired fuel stop.
    Good luck.

What do you mean pre IFTA? The federal, state, and local tax is included in all posted diesel prices. IFTA tax is filed 4times a year. Every quarter. Goes by trucks total miles for said quarter, then total diesel purchased, then divided to arrive at mpg. Then miles in each state. Fuel purchased in each state. Miles divided by your mpg. That figure is how much fuel you burned in that state. If you burned more fuel in that state than you purchased, you or someone has to pay tax rate per gallon on unpurchased fuel that you burned. Every state has different tax rate.

If you are paying your IFTA, you want to factor the tax out to figure where to buy your fuel. Everyone pays the same fuel tax in the states you travel no matter where you buy the fuel. The tax is paid by figuring how many gallons you burn in each state.
If you are leased to a carrier like I am, who files the IFTA for me and does not charge back shortages, I buy my fuel based on the cheapest pump price with tax still included.

There is an app called fuel book. It will figure your trip with the tax in or out.
Some carriers file your fuel tax but they figure each truck separately and then you need to buy your fuel with the tax figured out to truly get your cheapest fuel price. If you are a true independent and or file your own fuel tax you should buy fuel this way also.

Other carriers like mine file my fuel tax, but they figure it on a fleet wide basis, which is why I buy the cheapest pump price with tax figured in. If I have bought more fuel in low tax states and burned more fuel in high tax states they don’t charge me for the shortage.
