His Phantom must’ve been shot down by a SAM.

I've been approximately 15 yards off to the side of one, on the ground, when they hit afterburner on both J-79 engines at the same time, just before takeoff. It's an odd feeling/surreal to feel vibrations going thru every bone in your body.

Most of the planes that hit the round-down and crashed & burned were the F-8. Seems the tail of the aircraft would drop and be too low for landing.
(round-down is the very rear of the flight deck.)
