Hey,
I decided to pull the trigger and just do it. I could either go boom or bust but at least I would have given it an honest shot. I start my CDL course at a community college in the next county over from me in October for 8 weeks which means if all goes well then I will be a CDL graduate come December just in time for the new year. I got a copy of my 7yr MVR which is clean and hopefully it stays that way. I got my drug screen and physical done also. I had to wait in a cramped office for an hour to be seen but it wasn't too bad. I passed everything however I only got a 1 year medical card due to my high blood pressure reading, surprise! So that's something I will definitely have to deal with if I expect to have a long career in trucking.
I'm in the state of Georgia so I qualified for the HOPE grant which pays a portion of the costs. I will pay just under $1500 out of pocket which isn't bad since this is my only option for non-company sponsored training. In the next few days, I'm gonna get a CDL booklet from the DMV so I can get a head start on the CDL permit. So, wish me luck.
I haven't decided on a "starter" company yet. I'm still reading this forum and other websites for research and will finally decide closer to graduation time. I don't know if it matters much but whatever company I get with would need to have a terminal in my hometown of Savannah, GA so I won't have to drive far for home time. With transportation such a huge part of the local economy here due to the Georgia Ports, I'm hoping there such be a few terminals here of the "big starter" companies...
Finally, I will start CDL community college course in October

Congrats and good luck. There was another poster here a few months ago that went to Savannah Tech in Hinesville, or Walthourville I think to be more presise... Is that the one you are talking about? He had a lot of good to say about it.
I used to live in Savannah bfack in the 90's, I hung out in Coaches Corner, the one was on Mall Blvd. I used to throw darts with a guy that was the splitting image of Geraldo Rivera, just shorter, and he brokered loads out of the port... mostly lumber. I wish I could remember his name, but if you see a Geraldo look alike, thats probably him. -
Good choice. Went to CRST in Iowa to get my CDL thru their driver training program. What a scam. I prepaid cuz I didn't want to have to work for slave wages. What they don't tell you in advance is that if you can't learn to drive a truck in 5 days -- with maximum 1 hour behind the wheel driving a day - CRST kicks you out. I caught the horrible cold/illness going around and got very sick. During the 5 days we had to drive, I got less than 2 hours behind the wheel. Then they said that my skills were not sufficient. Really? What a surprise!
Do yourselves a favor - DO NOT GO TO CRST. I'm starting at my community college in October, too.TnVols Trucking Thanks this. -
Glad to see another 8 week CC program out there. I hope to be starting one in NC in October. My school requires you to get your medical and CDL Learner's Permit before coming to school. Best of luck to you.

I would also apply for a Pell Grant. Ask at the college financial aid office. You might even make a profit.
So far you are doing 100% of the things you should be doing. Congratulations
