Following distance, what am I doing wrong?

I keep hearing how it's impossible to keep a decent following distance when in traffic.

Instead of cherry picking 30 seconds here's a half hour or so of video. No close calls, no rush of 4 wheelers trying to kill me. What am I doing wrong?

I get onto the big road about 5 minutes in. If you're into watching paint dry feel free to watch the whole thing.

 

Not enough traffic up north for following distance to be an issue. Here you go though...

 

It can't be done. As soon as you create space ahead of you someone will fill it. People will be constantly cutting you off. Before you know it you'll be doing 3 miles an hour, you'll never get anywhere. It may sound good on paper but it's just not possible to keep a decent following distance in traffic.

I disagree.

 

And they continue to cut me off.

 

umm, no. I'm not in light traffic and I'm basically going with the flow while maintaining a decent space.
