I just ran the numbers to haul frac sand as an owner operator. Anybody willing to do this is donating their time to the big oil companies.

I figured that my net hourly rate before business expenses would be about $35-53 an hour. That doesnt take into account breakdowns, traffic jams, long lines at the load out or wellsite, etc.

Can I register as a 501c3 charity and work for the oil companies? Is anybody actually making a profit? Why would anybody do this?

There used to be big money in hauling frac sand, until the rate-cutters came in. The invention of sandboxes, and the ability of container haulers to haul them, had a lot to do with it.

As our technology increases efficiency, our hourly wages go down. Thats F'd up.

It's not about technology it's about the marketplace being flooded with haulers, many of whom are rate-cutters.

I've been on load projects with H1b's that need smart phone tech to navigate and translate. The rate-cutters are the the truck owners that know they can hire a h1b at sub-par wages and offset the lack of skilled labor with technology.

Lately, the majority of trucks hauling sand boxes in my area are being held together with bungee cords. Also about 1 out of 5 trailers have operational lights. Standards have severely dropped, and everyone knows, you get what you pay for

As one truck is run to death they hire another.
    Its like a swinging door.
The rates in the oil field are not enough to run a truck and bay your bills and put food on the table.

It's mostly the container haulers who left the ports to come haul sand boxes for way cheaper than the pneumatic companies could or would.

When frac sand haulers are willing to haul for vacuum truck rates, drivers sit for hours for free, etc., you know the race to the bottom is darn near complete.
