For a while, I was buying a cheaper fuel from Murphy's USA and other places that offered a very low price on Deisel. But, when I had to pay my quarterly IFTA, it was over $1,100. OUCH!!!

I was told, that because I bought fuel at those places, then none of the money I spent, went towards my IFTA.

Is this because there is nothing to identify me and my truck on the reciept. (which was just a simple sales reciept, and not the trusk stop kind with the truck number, milage etc etc). Or could it be that they just don't pay IFTA?

If it's just a reciept problem, is there anyway to get credit for those quarters by re-issuing those reciepts with the proper identification hand written on the reciepts?

No. I don't want to turn the focus to another topic, but why would buying deisel on the "rez" make a difference?

As soveriegn nations fuel tax is not collected on reservations. I'm not familiar with Murphys. What states are they in?

The rejection of your fuel receipts has nothing to do with the location of the business where purchased but rather with the receipts not meeting requirements.

These requirements are the receipt must show date of fuel purchase; type of fuel (diesel, gasoline, propane, etc.); name and address of seller(physical loacation ie: 1234 1st St., Fargo, ND); total fuel in gallons or litres purchased (some IFTA jurisdictions also want price); identification of vehicle (serial number, licence number, truck number); purchasers name. Altered receipts are not accepted and writing something in with a pen could be considered an alteration.

Are these locations close to you? Perhaps you could get them to issue a credit card type reciept.

IFTA is an agency for reporting fuel tax, they do not collect taxes. The taxes are collected by the states.

Some states, IN and AZ come to mind , have a higher tax on truck fuel than other vehicles eg: autos, pick ups etc. Were you paying auto fuel prices and are now being charged the difference?

    hrdman2luv Thanks this.

The issue of the receipts has been covered already. A big factor is you buying fuel at the cheapest places you can. IFTA is designed around the concept of buying enough fuel in each state that would be required to travel the miles you drove in that state. Assuming you travel in several states it is better to find the best price on fuel in the state that has the highest fuel tax. Also some states do not collect all the tax at the pump, making their displayed prices artificially low when compared to neighboring states. Understanding IFTA and making good choices in your fuel purchases is just part of trucking as a business. Unless you are leased to a company that pays your taxes without charging them back to the drivers, then simply buying the cheapest fuel available is not a good strategy for an interstate driver.

I just got off the phone with the lady that handles the company i'm leased to, fuel tax reporting.

She said, that I could continue to fuel at murphy USA, as long as the origanal reciept was turned into them. And that the reciept showed the following:

    Amount of fuel purchased
    Price per gallon
    Total gallons purchased
The name and Address of the fuel stop

Also: The truck number and license number had to be on the reciept. If the store didn't print the truck number and license number on the reciept, then I could hand write that info. But the other had to be printed.

She also said that they would go back and credit my IFTA for those quarters to my 1st. quarter, as long as the origanal reciept was turned in with that info on it.

Hoooray. Finally a break. Looks like my 1st quarter tax bill will be alot better.

Thanks for the info guys. I contacted the company I am leased to, and thought they had handled it to no avail.
