I got my CDL in March 2012 and went to Squire as a Student Driver but quit after a bad experience. Its been a over a year now and I wanted to know if there are any companies that would talk to me and who they are?? I am located in southern Mississippi. I have a chance to go to a small company here in the south but they are all automatics and I really wanted to drive a standard. Can I still get training at a school even if I have my CDL and would I have to go through the whole process or go straight to driving part of school?? I am hopping one day I will be able to get a local job in a couple years but most of the local jobs in my area are standards so I would like to drive a standard. Id appreciate any advice and suggestions on what good schools are close to Mississippi. I am thinking about taking the automatic and getting some experience and then go to a school and learn to drive a standard. Or do you think after driving for a while even if its an automatic would a company talk to me and put me with a trainer and I could then focus on my shifting with a standard. I drove with a friend of mine and he said I could drive good but that I needed to work on my shifting. Thanks alot.

Hi Dan,you sound like a nice guy that really wants to make trucking your carreer.First thing is just because you had a bad exp don't just up and quit.Almost every student/new drivers have bad exp.Its an everyday thing in trucking.Since you have your CDL you won't have to go thru the entire course but companies will require you to take a refreshers course since you haven't worked in trucking for a yr then you'll go out with a trainer.I would suggest learning how to operate a manual transmission because if you go automatic and quit that company then find one with 10 speeds, you'll have to go thru training all over.

Money first, type of transmission second.
These companies will probably hire you & probably have online applications:

    Maverick
    Howard Transportation
    Schneider
    Paschall Truck Lines

I'm sure there are several others.

CRST will pay for CDL school if you agree to work for them for 8 months.

What has your work history been like since you quit? If you don't have a perfect work history with no gaps most trucking companies won't hire you.

Check out Super Service LLC. They'll probably take you if you don't have safety incidents and you'll go out solo-style with a trainer for 5 weeks. Pay is 30 cpm and 01 extra for Hazmat.

well as for my work history after leaving Squire I have worked part time raising and selling livestock and yes I have W2s for that and I also drew unemployment in 2010, but the company went out of business and yes I have proof of that as well . Other than that Ive got an ok work history. thanks.

The reason I was considering the automatic was its over the road and I thought that might get me more experience as being away from home and just getting more familiar with the truck in general. If I can get through that for maybe a year and go to a school or company where I can drive a standard and be able to focus on shifting. I felt that maybe at Squire I was taking too much at first you know being away from home and trying to shift and deal with a trainer. Im 41 so Im not a spring chicken. Thanks alot and I appreciate it.
