COUNTLESS ’LIVES IN JEOPARDY’: 70-year-old semi driver charged in deadly June crash on I-69 involving 3 semis, 3 cars
Court records obtained by 21Investigates say the collision began when Degaj, who was driving 73 miles per hour in a construction zone marked with a speed limit of 55 miles per hour, “slammed” into the vehicle driven by Saddington. Degaj’s semi then rear-ended Maller’s van.
He then rear-ended another semi, causing it to collide with a vehicle, which then struck a third semi.
The Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division was on the scene and told investigators that Degaj’s commercial driver’s license was not valid at the time of the crash. They also determined he was not proficient in English.
Police forensically downloaded the contents of a tablet found in Degaj’s truck, which indicated YouTube was active before the crash.
Gjergj Degaj 70 is charged with two counts of reckless homicide
