    Good afternoon everyone
My name is Matt and I am 33 years old. I have been driving for about 10 years but local reefer.

Over the years I have saved up and am considering purchasing couple reefers to do OTR.

My question is how much can I expect to make per truck. The few guys I have interviewed can do about 2800 miles a week and I will pay them .48CPM. I was told operating costs per mile are going to be about .95 CPM.

The two trucks I am buying are 2014 Volvo 670 with 400k miles and payment is 1500 each.

I am expecting to net around 65k a year. What are your thoughts.
I have a sick wife and she can't work and that's why I want to start a business hoping I can keep her at home.

    Thank you all

OK. That is first to consider. Secondly do you have savings set aside for emergencies?

So basically your cost to operate is approx 1.43 pm. Rounded up to 1.45 pm. That's a break even point (baseline)and whatever u gain from there is profit.

Seems to me like you know where it's going. Quite a few dont.

Yep. So if my reefers running loads from truckstop for a while making 1.75-1.80 average and each runs about 115000 mikes a year 65k shouldn't be to difficult if anything close to 80 after taxes, right?

    Sorry for all the questions

Did you add in the cost of employing people?

Whatever you pay your guys, add in another 25-30% for employment taxes and workman's comp.

And also add in months of downtime for when your driver decides to quit and go to another company and you can't find another one. Remember that turnover rate in this industry is 100%+. Trucks are being put up for sale these days because the owner can't find and/or keep a driver. I've seen this multiple times.

Add in 6 weeks of downtime for drivers wanting to be home, and also trucks being down and needing to be serviced.

IF you can keep all your trucks loaded AND have a driver for them available 90% of the time, you can probably make $25-30k per truck per year before your taxes.

From all the calculations I've done on the subject, one can expect to have 3.5 trucks running to make the same as if he were just driving one by himself.

Well, kinda. But are you going to realistically run 115000 miles per year? That's an average of 2200 miles per week, constantly. 52 weeks at 2200 miles. I don't believe that's realistic.

And ask yourself, will I always get 175 pm runs? You might end up with an average of say 175 pm runs, some coming in less some more.

You have ur own authority correct? If so hoof it and try to find a few good customers u can be consistent with. Reefer always has the option of hauling hazmat.

There are so many variables to that situation. But at least u know where u stand.
