I always took 90 and 29, but couple times used US 85. This time of the year it all depends on wind and snow

Do you run the speed limit where staying on the interstate will be a big time benefit? If you don’t or running 2 lane doesn’t bother you I-29 to 212 to 45 to 14 is decent running. Just make sure to follow the truck route coming into Pierre so you don’t make the news for stuffing your trailer under the train crossing.

Rapid City is in SD not ND but I would do this . . .

I'd take I-94 to 83 South to 14 West (be sure to follow the truck route through Pierre as there is a low bridge if you don't), then 34 West to 63 South to I-90 West to Rapid City

If you go east on I90, there is a 2-lane about half-way to Wall that will take you through the Cheyenne River and the Black Rock reservations, then you head north towards Bismarck, then east on I94. Open range on the reservations, so drive it during daylight hours.
If you run across any Hoots with big trucks along the way (they dress like the Amish, and usually drive 'mountain double' flatbeds with hay or grain hoppers), they know these roads best....

Do you have the ability to run the speed limit? The limit on the interstate in SD is 80. If you’re going to run 65-70 you can make just as good of time on the two lane because there really aren’t many towns to travel through and you’ll be saving a lot of miles.

I concur. The 2 lanes in ND and SD really don't slow you down much at all.

Late to the party, this is my former backyard. As long as I wasn't avoiding from my friends from the scale houses, it was west to Jamestown, south to Aberdeen (unless I needed to hit the office in Redfield), west again to US83, down to Pierre (that's pronounced Pier, BTW) and US14 to Wall.

Running to Watertown and then 212 to 281 to 90 eliminated most of the out of route and maximized Interstate mileage.

And rarely got to do either because I almost always had something to pick or drop somewhere between the two.
