I'm trying to figure out my legality for picking up a trailer a few states over. I am 20 and have a cdl and medical card which of course means I am stuck to in state driving. I am needing to pick up a trailer I bought which is located in Nebraska and I am in Washington. It is a personal trailer that I am picking up and won't be using for any business purposes, but the truck I will be towing it with on the return trip is commercially registered under my company. Would I be considered someone who is commercially hauling interstate while under 21 or someone driving for personal reasons who happens to be driving a commercially registered truck? Truck is a dually, not a semi.
While it seems to me I should be legal due to the fact the trip is for personal use, I just don't want to be shut down during my trip if someone calls it a bluff. Anyone have experience getting pulled over interstate while under 21 or have any general advice on the matter?

if the vehicle you are driving requires you to have a CDL, then I'm pretty sure you can't do it. Maybe @brian991219 can better answer you.

Ok cover up the signs on the truck and go. It is a dually pulling a trailer, so it is not something that is a big deal.
if you get pulled over then the chances of being dinged by a moron cop is about 50%, many of them will let you slide.Sons Hero Thanks this. -
A much better question: is the cop who pulls you over a deputy Barney Fife -- or a sherriff Andy Taylor?

If you're not hauling freight for pay, I would run with it. Most POE's check freight bills, not driver's license. Since trailer is for personal use, I believe it's in the same venue as you driving a RV, which is legal. Just my opinion

Trucks haul trailers all the time. With 2 more on top if its a flatbed. One could say that the 2 trailers on top are the freight.
I hauled 2 of those loads from Arkansas to Montana.
I also hauled a used purchased empty compartment tanker. Coast to coast.
And never got stopped.
All I had was the paperwork in an envelope. -
I’d run with it. Truck could be owned by anyone. Still personal use. No different than a borrowed Truck. If a cop bothers you, just tell him we said it’s OK. Lol.

Need a few more details .
What kind of truck is it ?
A f-3500
or is it a freightliner cascadia?
if it’s a class 8 tractor with MCC and DOT numbers on it , I’m gonnna say the scale house will consider it a commercial rig .
is the trailer you bought a cargo trailer like a flatbed or van ?
Or is it a camper trailer ?
does the trailer you bought have a valid annual inspection sticker ? -
On second thought, considering how many times I’ve been shut down, accused of working while on personal conveyance, I think you’re asking for trouble. It’s a grey area. Especially in Pa. They make up their own rules and the Magistrates enforce them in Court. You can’t win.
