Has anyone ever seen evidence of the driver shortage?

Raise the pay in the prerequisites for the job and you'll get better applicants. You can't pay crap and expect to get the cream of the crop.

There's no gap. A Driver's License is issued by said state, not the FMCSA. States are allowed to make their own laws which may be more restrictive than federal law but not less restrictive. Therefore, a state has the authority to require residents to present proof of citizenship and identity. For example, the State of Georgia has the "secure ID". You must show solid proof of identity, citizenship, and residency before a license will be issued. If you were issued a license before this took effect and your citizenship status is in question, good luck on a renewal. It doesn't matter whether it's a CDL or not.

I hear this a lot ... do you really think higher pay is not going to attract the "bad" drivers, too? You think somehow bad drivers know their worth and won't seek out higher paying jobs?

Good pay attracts THEM ALL. You have a church pot luck dinner with really good food, you're going to attract the people, and the ants and flies. The secret is offering a "fair wage" and make them prove their worth and value, and offer a rapid and meaningful pay scale increase (and honor the guarantee).

It's pretty easy to weed out the bad drivers using DAC and CSA scores talking with former employers. At this point I don't believe anything that company tells me as far as advancement goes. Initial amount paid is what matters so if that is too low you are not going to get quality applicants.

Checking a driver through DAC is not required as a prerequisite to hiring. Only companies that subscribe to their service send in information. Some of their data is obtained from public databases. This is why so much bad data shows up in their system. There is no crosschecking of names against CDL numbers and SSA numbers. This was one of the reasons for the class action lawsuit that is paying out now.
Mostly only large companies use their service, both for sending in info and requesting info. Smaller companies could care less about those reports.

No i live in real life. One where i have a brain, and can think for myself without the need of technology, or electronics. Why don't we just put a DOT officer in the passenger seat, or a full time babysitter in trucks today. This is what it seemingly is coming to. It is like society has to be attached to their devices to live. Let alone we need to look no further than the schools of today, were computers and devices are allowed in classrooms, and schools assign computers to students. I can go on and on about the issue of "ignorance" and lazy a--es in todays society.

As for that fact. You can believe what you want about me. I do not care. I am an American citizen, have my opinion and i did not ask anyone for their opinion on this matter. Sounds like maybe you are offended, as you fit into this category. Yes I do own a P.C for only a few reasons, my business, i am in my Masters Degree online, my cell phone is a phone( no texting, social media, or apps needed). I have a landline phone, pen, and paper.

What is so funny is that you truly think this makes you better than other people. You really think you a better driver/person because you are a technophobe. You can't just be happy that you live in the past, no no, you have to come on here (on your computer remember) and complain about other drivers and technology like nothing bad ever happened on the road back in the day.

I would love to know your cut off point for trucks. What year were they real? Like, is air conditioning okay or is that for wussy "new breed" drivers? Then I would love to see your actual truck... You know, just to make sure it's a "real one".

He does have a point though. We are way to relying on technology these days. Everybody is plugged into the phone and hardly anybody uses the CB anymore. I do love my GPS but I always double-check it with the Rand McNally paper Edition. All of these "safety features" they put on trucks these days I could definitely do without.

Drivers have no vote on safety features on trucks, they are either company or federally mandated for the most part. His complaint is with "new breed" drivers and any tech, except a PC presumably.

About the CB, let's be honest, we use to used it mainly for entertainment. We didn't have much else, radio stations came and went and audio books were all on tape and they were expensive. Sure, we got Bear and road reports but we mainly just passed the time with it. Once satellite radio came out I saw a marked decline in CB use because drivers didn't need it to pass the time anymore.

The only shortage i believe in is the shortage of good companies to work for.

They are out there but so many bad outfits for a handful of good ones..
