A lot of states allow passengers to ride in a 5th wheel camper as long as there is 2-way communication with the driver, and many states allow passengers in a cab-over camper. No state allows them in a commercial trailer.

I actually once rode a sort of bus thing but it was more like a tractor-trailer setup where the trailer had seats just like a regular bus.
It was really strange.
We were in a couple large groups.
One or two regular buses and then that Contraption thing.
There was actual communication radio to communicate with the driver I don't think we used it for anything but it was there.
This was in Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, I think we went to St Louis for some reason maybe went to a Cardinals game it was quite a long time ago.Last edited: Oct 19, 2018

They do this in Laredo, mostly a trailer load of immigrants headed to farms. You usually hear about it when they find the bodies.

It’s a state to state thing. And they have to be seatbelted in with a way to communicate with the driver and be able to open the door from the inside. Too tough to keep track of state to state. California allows passengers if its 5th wheel, safety glass, intercom and seatbelts.

I’ve heard that it pays very well to transport passengers in a trailer across the southern border.
Other than that why would you want to put people in a trailer?Mike2633 and Highway Sailor Thank this. -
Can’t haul uman beans in a trailer in Canada. Your country may differ but highly unlikely.
Mike2633 Thanks this. -
You can't haul passengers in any combination vehicle where the trailer can come detached from tractor.shogun Thanks this. -

I did hear on the news that there was a group that got caught trying to smuggle people in a refer trailer across the boarder. The trailer refer unit wasn't set to run at all. I think a few of them suffocated or got seriously sick. How awful to be in a refer trailer like that. A good refer trailer is usually pretty air tight really and there's no way to get out from the inside. So you're caught in that aluminum box, in the dark more or less and it's sealed pretty darn close to air tight. It's no good!shogun Thanks this.
