I'll stop to help, but I won't give rides, and honestly anymore I'll just call the local cops and have them look in on the people. I keep Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska highway patrols on my speed dial, as well as several sheriff's depts for areas where I know there's rarely ever a Trooper.

Last time I stopped to help was a lovely young woman with a blow out on the side of I 25, she was maybe 24 or 25, very light skinned black woman in a summer dress. She was driving a newer Volvo sedan, I struggled for 45 minutes trying to figure out how to get her dress off, er, um, I mean how to get the darn jack loose and out of the trunk so I could change the tire. This was actually on a Saturday, she called the company the following Monday to thank me for helping her. I got chewed out for stopping though.

It's a sad fact that the world is a dangerous place now. When I was young, '50s, '60s we thought nothing of hitchhiking to get to places, we relied on it and nobody thought it was dangerous, for either party. Later as a driver I often helped people out, especially other lorry drivers. All you had to do was wave a log sheet, or later a tacho disc, and the first truck that came along would stop. But now? Not so sure.

Just one totally random one about 8 or 9 years ago (not counting broken down truck drivers or people who crashed in the boonies)

I was driving on 97c in Southern BC and a pickup flew by at about 120 mph with a guy tailing him. Guy 2 smashed into him, sent him into the median and kept cruising. I pulled over, pickup guy jumps on passenger step scared for his life. I was worried I'd run him over if I drove off... so I let him in.

I got back up to highway speed and he explains the other guy is trying to kill him. Sure enough, here comes car 2 circling back. He hides in the bunk and I drop him off 70 miles up the road. I then called the cops to tell em what happened with his pickup.

It was super sketchy and I don't want to be dragged into a situation like that again. Right or wrong, I know I saved his ### though. Cop followed up and turns out he wasn't a bad guy, just an idiot... so there's that at least
