Doesn't it make sense to book your rental car at the same time you book your flight and hotel? Oh, well...

Rental car agencies can't let a car sit, waiting on someone to show up.
People do reserve rental cars and then when they go to get the car, there are none available. I've seen that at airports. Once you rent the car, you can keep it longer if you want as long as you pay the rent.
U-Haul isn't complaining though, they're making a killing by keeping their trucks on the move.

Rental car agencies are in survival mode, with a good portion of them selling their fleets (Hertz,Avis) to scrape up cash during the pandemic, plus the global chip shortage has made prices of cars high.

Car rental prices are ridiculous in Hawaii.
Wife's brother is there right now, and he wouldn't pay 1k/ day... yes, 1000 dollars a day... to rent a car.
It's cheaper by far to rent a uhaul.

What's an UBER going for? Seems cheaper than renting a car.

Wife's brother said there was only a couple Uber on Maui, and impossible to schedule.
Island life isn't anything remotely close to life state side.
Milk is 10 bucks a gallon.
Bread is 3 bucks a loaf for the cheap stuff.
However, you can get avocados that are big as your head for cheap, and they're fresh off the tree... best you'll ever eat.
