If your carrier requires hazmat -- they may well have their own hazmat "curriculum".
This will of course be above/beyond/in addition to -- that required to renew the hazmat endorsement itself.

For my state. I don't know that there is any training. Do have to retake the test to renew license. It's only a written test. The test had gotten ridiculously hard. It got to the matter of just one word wrong and the answer was wrong. At that renewal, I had to take the test 6 times to pass it. Then they wised up. Last time I renewed, the test was sane.
You do have to go get a background check. Redo the background check at renewal. Thus you're registered with DHS.
I don't know if it had to do with Hazmat. My last employer had us doing a short monthly safety course. Watch video. Answer questions at the end. We constantly hauled Hazmat. Others, I don't really remember? Seems there was that sort of thing here and there? This with companies I did haul Hazmat at times.otterinthewater Thanks this. -
Any refresher training will be whatever and whenever your employer requires. For your hazmat endorsement, you just have to retake the knowledge test and do another fingerprinting and background check, to see if you've been up to any mischief. Whether you study for it is up to you. In my state, it's every four years for the hazmat endorsement.

Three year Haz Mat training is not DOT.
It falls under OSHA 1910.120 requiring a 3 year refresher of the HM training required by EVERYONE associated with handling Hazardous Materials anywhere including transportation.
Any employee involved in the 'handling' which includes drivers, technicians, dispatchers, the person who produces the HM shipping papers and the individual who is responsible to purchase anything related to HM that will be used by the employees.
This is the employer's responsibility and is supposed to be done within 3 months of the individual's start of working with HM and should not be confused with the individual CDL holder's 4 year haz mat cycle.
I attended a FCMSA seminar on HM training where the gave us a hint on avoiding a fine if we had a DOT audit that saved my behind when the HM specialist spent 2 weeks auditing our files.
The owner of CEO is responsible for the content of the training materials used.
They asked how many of the attendees present were not the company owner and if we had sourced the training materials we should grab our boss the next day and have him sign a letter saying he designated the safety director [or whomever] to source and direct said training.
When my auditor asked me to leave the HM training files on the table for 'tomorrow' I made sure that letter was on the top of the stack.
The next day we cleared the HM portion before lunch!
Still got fined for logs....Last edited: Sep 18, 2026
austinmike, Dennixx, gentleroger and 1 other person Thank this. -
You're at Swift.
At Swift they use to make everybody, even those without Haz-Mat endorsement, take a stupid haz-mat training module every 2-3 years. Most pounded out the haz-mat questionnaire or module within 10 minutes.
For everyone else, the hazmat training is dependent on the employer. Most employers pirate some BS questionnaire or module off the internet or buy some JJ Keller type crap. It is not DOT specific but record of the training is required by the FMSCA, and record of the training can be audited by the DOT,
For the haz-mat endorsement, you have to take a haz-mat class of all ridiculous things.austinmike and gentleroger Thank this. -
Right, well a loaded trailer had hazmat and I said I couldn't haul it because I wasn't ever given said training. My manager contacted "safety" and "hazmat" team and they couldn't give my manager any info on such training. They gave me a different load.

The training is supposed to help you understand how to recognize Hazardous Materials, determine correct labeling/placarding and paperwork descriptions and a laundry list of safety items like PPE and how to use the orange HM guidebook.
It is also supposed to include 'job specific' training for the individual's area of responsibility; hence the 90-day window for completion when someone transitions from a non-HM position to one dealing with some aspect of handling hazardous materials.
The J J Keller program puts everything together, video, handbook, paperwork to create the files; everything except the JOB SPECIFIC portion and every auditor from DOT or OSHA and the like [hint: insurance carrier and/or Workmen's compensation] will question to see if there IS job specific training.
I attended a seminar regarding facility safety planning only to find the person giving the lecture was steering everyone toward the J J Keller products which his lovely assistant would be selling at the end. I watched several business owners sending their assistants to the sale table with the company plastic.
My employer used the J J Keller products, so I held back and flashed my logoed J J Swiss Army money clip at the guy and he quickly asked me to put it away....
They company safety planning 'kits' from J J Keller were at that time around $250.00 each and he was selling them for triple!gentleroger Thanks this.
