I got HazMat when I got my CDL back in the 1990s. I've kept a valid HazMat & CDL continously since then. I recently renewed my HazMat after getting a letter from TSA saying it was expiring soon. This was the first time since I had a CDL that the HazMat expiration date wasn't on same date as CDL expiration. Has this happened to anyone else? Everything is complete & renewed & my CDL has always been with the original issuing state.
HazMat expires in the middle of my CDL length.

Here in Iowa license is good for 8 years. Hazmat is good for 5 I believe. And Hazmat expires from date it was issued/ renewed. I'm surprised you got a letter. Last year I renewed mine I don't remember getting any notifications.

Same here in Texas HazMat is good for 1 year less than the CDL.

That screwed my license up at a dmv, I had to renew hazmat 1 year before license expired, they put wrong date on my license so now instead of my birthdate my license expires like 3 1/2 months before my birthdate.

Yes, it is now normal. States that did not already have a separate expiration date for hazmat are adapting to include one. This is because the hazmat background clearance is good for 5 years and some people had been complaining of it not matching their renewal cycle. Example, my home state of Pennsylvania just updated their renewal process if you have hazmat to include a separate expiration date.
I don't like this and was ok with "losing" a year on my threat assessment for the simplicity of not needing to go to the driver license center more than once to renew my CDL. Now, my CDL expires in Dec. 2025 but my hazmat doesn't expire until July 2026, so I will need to go to the license center before Dec. 2025 to take my hazmat knowledge exam and process the renewal, then before July I will need to get my threat assessment redone which will require a separate trip to the licensing center for the application (PA is one of a few states that we have to visit in person to get the application instead of TSA online). Then, after my approval letter comes I will need to go get my replacement CDL (PA hasn't made it clear if this will simply be mailed or I will have to go back in person to get it issued) with the updated expiration date which will now fluctuate based on the date my most recent threat assessment was approved.
It was easier when my CDL and hazmat both expired the day after my birthday every four years. I understand the different dates for states with a license period greater than five years, but if it is five or less years between renewals then the CDL and hazmat should expire the same date.
