Liteguy, your concerns are well placed and justified. Can you imagine how challenged you would be without the internet to aid you in your research? Did you know that Sage will help you complete resumes to obtain your first job? Did you also know that Sage will continue this benefit for life? If your first job doesn't work out for you for whatever reason go back to Sage. Get focused on what you want out of trucking. OTR? LTL? Local? Regional? Also Sage has been around for years and they have a real laundry list of companies to choose from. Pick their brain cells.

As far as Sage school goes... 1)Remain upbeat and positive. 2)Score as best as you can on all tests. If you have the CDL manual, read it, study it, know it. That will make school go that much easier.

Thanks PB. A local gig right out of school would be a dream. I have talked w/ Vonnie but want to get a face to face for myself, I think I can get a better read on a company doing that. Sorry for your unemployment, I myself have been w/o work for 4 months, I'm going crazy!! :biggrin_25526:
I would never hold anything against you for recommending a company. I realize it's my call. I am a noob so I'm looking for all the help I can get.

Hey Speedy, Yeah I have been researching Sage for quite some time. They have had some personnel changes, Wayne left as director, prices went up too, high demand I'm sure. Hopefully they are under the same ownership, they have a great program. Back 2 years ago when I was talking to them they told me a local gig would be very tough to find w/o at least 1 year OTR.
I agree this site is very valuable, and addicting! I find myself on here for hours. I really hope that companies pay attention to what is being said on here. I have watched the construction trade do the samething some of these trucking companies do, hire the cheapest labor possible. Then they wonder why their trucks look like they do and their turn around is so high, turn around costs, equipment costs, training costs. Like construction trucking has become a cheapend job, IMO, they hire anyone that can get a CDL. Why don't they try to retain good drivers, do whats right...oh yeah MONEY!
I was glad to read a post on here a few days ago about a driver that was promised to get home for x-mas, he was on the west coast and lived on the east coast, the company paid to fly him home...This is a company that I will seek out and go the extra mile for.:biggrin_25514:
Sorry for the winded post- Liteguy

    Hiya right back Liteguy,

Sage's prices went up? I didn't know. Wowzers! I spoze the economy affected them like us all. Me thinks I will have to continue to save my precious pennies as this current economy makes them more and more precious. I really hate paying for an MBA just to work for a local pizza joint. Bad analogy?

As with anything else, we have to Start somewhere. I really doubt that anyone stays with their very first trucking company. But if a company, even if it were Swift, treated me to a flight home for Christmas, oh yeah, what I wouldn't do for them.

Wowzers! Work has recently gotten very hectic. I WAS scheduled only a little bit more through the holidays but NOW I have been called in to work nearly every day. Not that I'm complaining cuz I need the hours. Too bad it isn't always like this cuz then I wouldn't bother becoming a trucker. However, if its like the last three years, I'll start the year off with one heck of a salary, then after groundhog day it will taper off and I'll gross less that 15K for the entire year. The big paychecks really come in handy now that the holidays are finally over. But that's pretty much the life of a rural carrier associate for the u s postal service. Feast or famine. Too little feast, too much famine. Sorry for the rant, but I had to vent.

Hey guy I'm back in school now and things are going well. I think I have got my ally dock and offset backing down well now and I guess they where right when they told us that driving is just like ridding a bike cuz even after the two week layoff it came right back to me.
I took a practice pre trip test today and did pretty well on it, I passed but not by a whole lot. I know all of the parts and names of said parts, I just have to get the possible defect names down. The testers are pretty anial about that I guess. I have till next Wedsday to get it down and then test out on Thrusday. I think I will do well on the driving and backing protion and if I can lock down the pretrip I will be on my way to fame and fourtune LOL LOL:biggrin_2559:.
Any way just thought I would let you guys know whats up with me and I will post soon.

Hi guys, I have one more day of school left and then it's test day. I,m thinking I have a very good chance to pass all of the test and get my CDL. We have done some practice test this week and I did better that I thought I would on all of them. I have 3 pre hire letters from May, Warner and Swift and I plan on trying out with May first. Anyway I will let youall know how this turns out.
    Later.

    Good good.

Well first a pre hire letter isn't a promise of employment and you will still have to pass their driving test during orientation. If you don't pass their test I'm not certain they will pay your way back home.

Next, if May doesn't work out, go with Warner or Swift but learn from your mistakes as to why May wasn't able to hire you, i.e, driving over curbs, backing up problems, shifting while driving over rr tracks, etc. DO NOT give up looking for work if the first company doesn't hire you. The longer it takes you to get hired, the harder it is for companies to hire you. I know that I wouldn't want to waste my training dollars.

On the other hand if you remember and exercise your training and are hired at May, let us know how your miles go, both the good and the bad.

I think that Liteguy starts school soon but I won't be starting school for a couple of years yet.

    Good luck.

Hey speedy, I don't think I will have a real problem getting on at May, although I heard the safety guy, that does the road test and backing test can be a pain in the ares. I'm not to worried about getting home from their yard, it's only about 50 miles from my house.
I've had good feedback form my instructors and they seem to think I will do just fine. I hope I don't sound like a worrywart but I just like to hege my bets and cover all of my bases with a backup plan. I will let you guys know how it goes tomorrow and what happens at May.
    See you all later.
