I might have made a major error today. I bought a heavy truck 50,000 lb plate in wisconsin today for a quarter period. I just learned this plate is not legal for traveling loaded outside of wisconsin. I paid $300 for the plate and im not allowed to return it for a refund... i did hear a rumor when i lease onto a company i can put their info on the registration and be legal....but what about IRP and IFTA? how can i make all this still work or get my money back and buy the proper plates (no they will NOT let me exchange or return them). Am i screwed or do i have creative options?

If you lease onto another co, I do believe they handle all of that for you.

They are two different offices (IRP and regular dmv heavy plates), i dont believe that is an option but it absolutely sounds reasonable to me, but these guys dont work on reason....beaurocrats. there has got to be a workaround. They wouldnt let me return the plates as i stupidly put the time i first drove the truck as yesterday....pisses me off because i told the counter girl i was traveling interstate

Well, you could run intrastate for a couple months and use them, then upgrade to apportioned plates when they expire. Other than that, though, you won't be getting any use out of those tags. Chalk it up as a lesson learned, and don't make that mistake again. Be glad it was only one quarter and not a full year.

    you heard wrong.

$300 isn't a killer, just go and get your plates the right way.

BUT if $300 is going to kill anything, you shouldn't own the truck.

Look at the $300 bucks as what Dave Ramsey refers to as “stupid tax”! This doesn’t mean you are stupid because we all pay “stupid tax” from time to time. Some of us have paid thousands to learn different things along the way. Learn from it and move on with your business and hope your next lesson isn’t $3,000
