I think that's an awesome invention. It certainly seems it would drastically reduce the amount of innocent victims you see so many times in those police videos. Hat's off to the StarChase people.

Wasn't this in that movie like 20 years ago with Tom Selleck and Gene Simmons?

I've not seen the movie. At least, I don't remember it. But it sounds like you might be right.

Technology is slowly working its way into our everyday lives. I think eventually we will have a built in shut down switch in every vehicle that is keyed to your license plate number. That way the police can simply punch in your plate number and disable the vehicle. I'm sure there is already a patent on such an idea/device but its just not cost effective yet. What better way to stop high speed chases, or grand theft auto? Within minutes you could remotely shut down any vehicle for whatever reason.
Think about it, you already have remote service based on subscription services that can unlock your car and have gps/lojack, its not too far a stretch to see it taken a step further. I know some larger city police departments have special cars that have this shutdown feature built in to trap car thieves. The thief steals the car and drives away but the car is rigged with cameras, a shutdown switch, and door/window locks so the police flip a switch and the doors/windows lock, the engine shuts down and the thief goes to jail. Pretty funny actually. -

I also agree that this is a good idea.
I have also read somewhere that they are working on a device that will shut down an automobile with some sort of small EMP generator or to send a shut down signal on cars that have computer electronics.
