Hello. Don’t know if this is the right place to post this. I apologize if it isn’t.
I wanted to know: I have terrible work history. Never held a job for a year, lots of gaps between jobs, and couldn’t even begin to tell you a ten year work history - don’t even know how I would go about constructing one as I don’t remember all of the employers I have had over the last ten years. It’s that bad. I would probably have to go to the social security office to even try to do this. When I wasn’t working I was either a stay at home mom or living off of meager spousal support.
I also have a criminal record: four misdemeanors and two dismissed charges. These are: criminal trespassing (2025), immunity prohibited conduct/abuse of the 911 system (2025), jaywalking (2025), and disorderly conduct (2021). The two dismissed charges are for littering (2025).
I know that having a company pay for my cdl training is completely out of the question. However, I would really like to try to become a truck driver. If I paid for my own cdl a licensure, is it possible to be hired by a truck driving company? I just don’t want to pay for the schooling and then never be able to find a job. Thank you for your insight. I know both issues are pretty ugly.
ps: how many years of driving history do companies look at? My three year record is completely clean but not so much before that.
Horrible employment history and criminal record

Problem with paying for you own cdl etc, is most insurance companies want you to attend an accredited driving school and often will not cover you, so companies won't hire you.
Best thing I can tell you is get as much of the work history together. Then go to your local unemployment office. Tell them you want to go to trucking school and ask about the WIA or WIOA program. Each state calls it different things. If your low income or unemployed they will pay for everything through a grant. You may have to reach out to a school first then the U/E office.
@Chinatown is our resident expert on trucking jobs and advice. Since I tagged him he will be around soon.
As far as work history, if you were a stay at home mom, I imagine most companies would accept that. You might run with your idea of reaching out to the Social Security office. Tell them what you're attempting to do. They can probably email you the info. Then you have it. Rest of the time, you can probably put stay at home mom.
Good luck with everything.nextgentrucker, BrothaTrucka513, tscottme and 1 other person Thank this. -
I did look into wioa- funds are frozen. They are not giving out the grant at all.
After I got divorced I still went through unemployment gaps - living on spousal support.
in addition, many jobs I have held have been part time fast food jobs too. From what I understand truck driving only accepts full time jobs.
I’m just wondering if it’s at all possible to be hired anywhere if I pay for my own cdl training- yes I would plan to pay for school.77fib77 Thanks this. -
It doesn't matter who pays for the schooling, as long as you go. The job history may hurt a bit. That is the only thing I cant be sure about.

I just don’t want to pay seven to eight thousand dollars for trucking school and then never be able to find a job.

What you can do, reach out to some of the companies you are interested in driving for. Call them. Tell them you want to go to school. Tell them you need a pre-hire. Its a letter saying they will hire you when you complete school. Most schools will require you to this. You will fill out an application with everything you have. Make sure that you tell them about your work history.
Also, if you filed tax returns that info should be on there for where you worked.gentleroger Thanks this. -

I just want to be clear: my work history is soooooo bad. Have even held jobs for months/month. I just thought maybe if I went to school for trucking I might still be able to find a job. And yes I have gone through unemployment gaps in between these jobs as well. I couldn’t even begin to construct a ten year employment history. I would literally have to go to the social security office to try to get ten years. I am genuinely trying to figure things out at this point in my life. -
I get how bad it is. The only way you will know for sure is seeking out the premises from companies. Only they can answer that question.
