I cranked my 1985 Peterbilt 359 yesterday morning and noticed a puddle of oil under it after only a few minutes. My front crankshaft seal appears to all of a sudden be leaking pretty bad. How do I change it? Thanks
How do I change the front crankshaft seal on a 3406b?

They generally don't just fail and puke oil like that. Check your crankcase breather system for blockages. Generally if the dipstick doesn't blow out, the front or rear seal does.
You're going to need some special tools to replace that seal. If you can't borrow/rent them you're best to head to the shop with it. Those front seals are tempermental and will be damaged if you try and beat them in with a drift or block of wood. -

But to get it out does the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley have to be pulled off with a puller or will it unbolt and come right off?
-
Not sure on the B model. The one on my A model just bolts on and is centered with a dowel.

The pulleys and balancer just set off. You got to have the seal installer or you will be sad

The damper/pulley unbolt and do not require a puller.
The new seal comes with the wear sleeve installed and
Cat says do not separate them, they have to be installed together.
Cat makes a nice installer and removal kit but its big $$$$.AModelCat Thanks this. -
You can’t separate the new seals. There is a lip on the rear and a face on the front. Just no way to get them apart without tearing them
